canals near preserved railways

hi all

just a bit of fun, looking for locations, perhaps from your travels, where a canal or navigable river,
ideally connected to the inland waterways network has a preserved, or private, non network rail,
line nearby.

Shouldnt be that hard considering the railways took over from the canals.

The one I can think of is Llangollen, though havent been, my dad once went on a trip where
one leg was by canal boat and then returned on the parallel steam railway.

Spent 6 years on the canals done probably 80% of the navigable waterways including the Thames from Limehouse to Brentford but never gave a thought to rail, so cannot help here, Rick

I know an old joiner and his son that live on Staffordshire canals in their separate barges

Both total piss heads, and both absolutly hilarious characters, I've always wished to do it myself, but not so much now since I've met the mrs and had kids etc

Probably a bit dull for here, got stuck on a sand bank on the Trent, spent a year on the Lancaster which is land locked only available via the Ribble Link or Road Transport, so did the Link, an experience on its own, Rick

like! reckon would be interesting going down humber from trent or aire to get to anchorholme and river hull upto driffield.

read were some used mersey to get from leeds and liverpool to albert dock, or down mersey
to manchester ship canal etc. mind think a inland link is being built between albert dock
and leeds-liverpool.

down thames to access river medway,, mind quite a few links been built since i was really
into subject like kennet and avon, huddersfield tunnels etc.

You would not be disappointed going to LLangollen with miles of canals and 15 miles or more of railway as well as a beautiful town with road-rail-canal-river all fitted into a narrow valley.

The caravan club have a site at Chirk which is a short walk from the canal where it crosses the vally and then goes into the tunnel. The tunnel looks as though it runs under the hill on which the site and castle sit.

Used to smell the choclate factory in town if the wind was in the right direction. Regards. Bri
