First thoughts...

There's prob no syncro on reverse (lots of vehicles don't have it) and if clutch is dragging slightly that wud give the symptoms u describe. Because there is syncromesh on forwards gears then it can mask a slightly dragging clutch.

Is the clutch right at the bottom ? Does it start engaging as soon as you lift the pedal a little bit ? If so, then if it's a cable it might needs adjusting, if it's hydraulic, might need bleeding or cylinder/s replacing.

Other one is input shaft sticking slightly on spigot bush in flywheel.

Basically both probs mean the box isn't disengaging fully from the engine

Just thought, a dodgy clutch cover cud also cause it too, but that's pretty rare

the clutch is quite sharp if that makes sense, but theirs a small bit of travel before you feel the vehicle move, seems to go into every other gear quickly enough

Well, I'm not familiar with your motor, but if it's a cable operated clutch, have a look at the gearbox end and see if there is any slack in the cable that can be adjusted out a little. Don't over adjust it though, or you could end up with a slipping clutch.
