out of interest what knackers discos off road?

Front diff clearance and skinny tyres

But then the drive shafts break, diffs shatter their pinions, prop ujs and cvs die, 300tdi's are twice as strong as the 200s tho, stronger axles so they told me the other week

I had fun it was my first time laneing! only thing that annoyed me was waiting for the landys :naughty
we was out for 4&1/2 hours, met some good people with a lot of knowledge about the local area and 4x4's
I got fed up looking at the back of a disco with a "one life live it" sticker in the back window tho :lol:lol:lol

Land rovers tend to be a pile of overrated nostalgic rotting scrap, smoking and pissing oil from every orifice, jap motors tend to be bomb proof and reliable ;)

Off road they are equally as capable stock, perhaps jap motors are better, in my experience they are

Big old disco heavy and has long overhangs. Open diff front and back is the biggest weakness after the nut by the steering wheel :lol

To be fair, in the first photo that disco looks like its running on something like 205 16 pure road tyres. Strange considering it has a winch fitted. But if I'm right those tyres wudn't grip damp grass let alone any mud.

If you consider it fairly, on paper there's no reason other than the open diffs that a disco shudn't go everywhere a Terrano would on the same tyres.

Don't get me wrong, I'm an ex Landy enthusiast who has gone over to a Patrol, but I've done a lot of off roading in Landies and Landy based machines over many years and they aren't bad, yes in many ways they aren't built as well and it doesn't help that a lot get hammered harder and maintained less than Jap equivalents due to the reputation that they live on. The 200 TDi is by far the best engine they did. I've taken the heads off some of those engines with 200k miles on em and they've been spot on inside.

Always remember, it's good if your landy is leaking oil, it's quite normal and it means it's not empty yet, ther's still time to top it up again.

as previously stated, that 1st stuck landy... i wouldnt take it on tarmac with those tyres, but i suppose thats what winchers like to do isnt it, get stuck lol!
i had a 300tdi and it served us well, no issues at all, we were going to have a td5 but after looking at 7 td5's in the 3.5k to 4.k mark, they were all without doubt rotten! not the boot, the chassis, right by where the rear shock absorber mounts. nissan much better value for money and tho we dont off road we find it as capable a tow car and family car as a landy, if not better.
