View Full Version : progress ?
some of you will know I have been advised to move from my current house because its unsuitable ( I keep falling down stairs etc ) , so ive been on the council waiting list for some time .
recently I was given priority status after yet another fall ,
well I now have the head of housing on my side , and she has put me down for a lovely bungalow in the shelf area of Halifax ( its really nice ..... and ideal for radio :augie:sly )
Sheila isn't too impressed cos its a bit isolated and quite some distance from shops / buses , but we are going to take a look around the area today .
we wont know if weve got it until next Monday .
cross ya fingers / legs etc chaps and chapesses :naughty
dare I dream of progress being made ? :D

Good look mate
Online shopping get it to your door
I have a problem with falling down stairs but i blame it on the water or toys left strewn around
cheers mate :thumb2 , it has open fields to 2 sides and is at the end of a cul de sac ..... looks lovely on the photo , its just below queensbury , so very high up ..... ideal for radio , but also not good for bad weather because its exposed to it

Best of luck Pete, hope Sheila likes the place. Trouble is I guess if you refuse too many the authorities may not take too kindly. Keep your freezer well stocked and you'll be fine for the winter weather. Surely there will be a local shop nearby too. It does catch the weather up there but as you say nice for radio, you may get a small antenna outside too and you'll have loads of access to helpers for that.
Let us know how you get on Pete:thumbs

Good luck...:clap
As said, most supermarkets deliver now, just keep a small reserve in the freezer. As for the rest, it just makes popping to the shops more of an occasion, where instead of going several times a week/month, and wasting all that travelling time, you cut down to just a couple of times a month and make a day of it, even stopping for a bite at a little cafe for lunch. Somehow it feels far more relaxed, and free's up so much more time to enjoy yourself.
As for doctors, if yours are anything like ours down here, they do sod all, and you can't get an appointment for 3 weeks anyway. Even when we have managed to get an emergency appointment, they have then just told my wife she should have called an ambulance several hours earlier, and packed her off to hospital, so we could have saved time, worry, and mileage by just going there in the first place.:lol

Sounds nice Briggie, what are the buses like, some villages do suffer with poor time tables/services and just remember that exposed homes in the winter do suffer, see if the council have insulated it well, if so, add some more.
Hope all goes well :thumb2

bus service is diabolical , not really an option unless you walk a fair distance ( which I cant ) , so a reliable vehicle is essential

Pete, not sure of your age (rude to ask and all that) but if your moving to a bungalow because your clocking on a bit, a good bus service will be invaluable, if you ever find you have a problem driving, just a thought. ;)

thats nearly as high up as where I work at over 1000 feet in werrington stoke on trent (google it I dont know exact hight)cleaning windows:(.
yes its a frikkin big ladder:lol.
its deffo got its own climate from the bottom of the bank where I live.
as for living isolated you lucky git, I would love it the less neigbours the better, I think ive spoke to my next door bloke about 4 times in 2 years.
and besides your motor will get you anywhere.
all the best mate.
good luck Peter, it is nice up there but as you said, Queensbury pretty much gets the worst of the weather, but on the flip side, that sonly for a max of a couple of weeks usually. That's the only drawback really, other than distance from anywhere, but if you want peace and quiet, then go for it.
Hi Pete
sounds really good
1- it seems like an idiot free zone
2 - online shopping
good luck mate

I always have warm feeling for Shelf, started my first schooling at Shelf school when I was evacuated there, never thought that it was high but it was a struggle walking to school through deep snow when you are a nipper. I have lived in a bungalow for forty years and I can recommend it. A good bus route is a bonus, never know when you are not able to drive or the car is broke. good luck bri

Hi Pete, sounds really nice, but! how far are the nearest medical facilities? doctors etc, you know you will need these in the future, I am really concerned that for you an isolated location is not suitable, I cannot understand the SS offering you a place like this, you really need somewhere near to the facilities you need, Rick
i think i know were the bungalows are briggie. you will get out of there in winter just put some good tyres on your bus and all will be well..
farmers never get blocked in they will clear the snow local to the farm so they can get cattle in/out or dairy tanker etc. there is a supermarket just on the road to buttershaw and a tesco by the lights in queensbury

HI RICK ,
the hospital is about 6 miles away , as for doctors ...... my own gp is about 4 miles away , and queensbury is quite a big village , as is buttershaw .... so im fairly sure medical facilities will be not too much of a problem , im only on the list for this bungalow anyway , I haven't been offered it yet , even though I have priority status , there may be others who need this more than me :nenau , I will find out on Monday ....... thanks for your concern rick , yes I realise I will get worse and medical facilities are something I need to take into account :thumb2
its finding a suitable compromise between sheltered housing / care ...... and independence ........ I have to think of Sheila too

hm , Sheila isn't too sure mate , shes worried about the isolation / shopping / doctors etc
Being isolated isn't such a bad thing and like all have said shopping to your door, If Sheila is worried check out my post code on google earth, doesn't really bother me at all, the local farmers have my phone number and they are only a call away should I need help. DN9 1EE
good to consider all the negatives, but I think although it is a little bit isolated in terms of geography, its not that bad mate, and a heck of a lot of people live there who also have medical needs etc. I reckon you'd be fine, doctors would get to you just as quick as where you are now. and if you think about it, the nearest supermarket in Queensbury is closer than the nearest supermarket to you (its a Tesco express I believe-near where a friend of mine lives)
well ...... I got a phone call from the housing dept ...... its mine !!!!! :D:naughty:naughty....... they are just cleaning it / sorting it out .... then we will have to decorate / wallpaper it etc ..... volunteers ? :augie:lol:lol

Well done really pleased for you and Sheila, get to know the local farmers, they are usually a good sort and will help you out should you need it. Before I got the Misty I was coming out of my lane in really bad snow in the celica.. the lane has a slight incline at the top and I got stuck, a quick call to one of my local farmers and he was there in the tractor to pull me out. They even cleared the lane and drive for us....

the residents association said they have asked the council for new fencing :naughty, unfortunately the " shed " is my responsibility so looks like im gonna have to get another one , ... id love one with windows in to use as my radio shack :sly:naughty:naughty .......as for parking .....there isn't any off street parking , but its a fairly quiet area and I can park fairly close to the door , which is usefull , the built in porch is usefull for storing/ charging my wheelchair too :thumb2 .
thanks for the comments about the bungalow , it means a lot to us :thumb2

Fingers crossed for you - at least you have several months to get to know the locals before the white stuff kicks in.
Re the shed, a couple of years ago I bought a plastic (no maintenance) 6' x 4' shed from B&Q, complete with floor, it bolted together with big plastic bolts (and it has a window!) I seem to recall at the time it was around £89. I had it delivered, it came as a series of large panels and has never let in any rain. If you could get someone to assemble it for you, something like this might solve your "Radio Shack" problem.
Any road up, good luck with the bungalow, hope all goes according to plan.

Good news
Enjoy your new plac
ffs .... now the walls have been steam stripped , its shown the plaster is in a terrible state , walls are bowed inwards as though its falling off , some walls have firkin big holes where the wallpaper was holding it on  , one wall in the bedroom creaks when you touch it .
ive mentioned this to the council , because obviously we cant decorate / wallpaper with it in this state ...... they said the next appointment for a plasterer is the 5th of august  , which will be for a " assessment " , so even if they plaster on that day , it will be about a month before we can wallpaper :(..... but yet they are still charging us full rent for a bungalow we cant live in for at least 2 months .
some of the decorating quotes to decorate the lounge and bedroom have been quite frankly piss taking .......£766 plus materials .... , we found one guy who quoted £85 per day plus materials , he estimated 4 or 5 days .... but he cant do it till mid September
