View Full Version : Hey folks, new patrol owner here...

Just picked up my '54 Patrol SVE this weekend and love her! Drives (and tows) great and really comfortable (stepped up from a '95 lwb 2.8 Shogun so very much enjoying the extra comfort!). Came with road tyres :doh so just need to put some AT's on her and she'll be good to go - Planning on doing a Transylvania 4x4 tour next year and based on how capable she is, even with the wrong boots on, she should be fine! :) Out of interest, what are folks preferences re rubber as I'm thinking General Grabber or BFG...
Already posted about a wee issue I've got in the technical section but thought I would mention it here as I don't think it's a Patrol only issue and some of the Terrano/Maverick owners etc might have some suggestions... anyway I'm getting a funny noise which, far as I can tell, seems to be happening during boost.
Sounds like a whooshing noise, almost like air rushing through the bonnet and into the cabin (there isn't any air coming in) or even a bit like hard rain hitting the windscreen. No warning lights or issues that I can see and she's just been mot'd and serviced so doubt it's something vital.
Only happens once she's warmed up so I wonder if it's maybe needing the bolts on the exhaust manifold tightened (had a similar sound on a swb Shogun when the manifold gasket was going).
Haven't had a chance to get a proper look under the bonnet yet but is anyone able to give me some guidance?
Cheers in advance!
Rob
Hi and welcome. For tyres i would recommend BFG all terrains, they are expensive but can last for 40000+ miles and will go anywhere that alot of mud terrains will go but with less road noise. Anyway im sure others will come along with their thoughts. Sorry i cant help with whoooshing noise

Hi and Welcome... I came in to see pictures of this beast...:doh
In the past, I have always liked BFG's as well, but not got around to putting any on the T2 yet though, as the tyres on it were nearly new.
Can't help with the whoosh, I was told though, that is the sound a deadline makes as it whistles past...:lol

I'll get some pics of the new girl up, didn't get a chance tonight. Very impressed with her though :) towed over 3 ton of hay and straw home to the farm on Sunday and didn't even notice (Shogun managed but I knew it was there).
She's just standard (for the moment ;) ) but will get the boots sorted out and go from there! Probably A-bar next...
Thanks for the tyre opinions folks. Would love to get BFGs but having priced things up I can't justify the extra expense. My mate who farms down the road from our wee place uses General Grabbers on his pickup and says they're pretty good so think they'll be the winners as I'll save about £120 in total over the BFGs.
When I'm not getting all rustic with the sheep I'm an agri solicitor so I know only too well what a passing deadline sounds like!:lol
By the way Lazy-Ferret, I checked out your site as I used to have a couple of albino jills, very good! :thumb2

Well I found out what was causing the noise; a jubilee clip on one of the pipes going to the intercooler was completely slack (I could move it back and forth along the pipe with my hand) my mate held onto the pipe while I revved and the noise went away so I just moved the clip back into its correct position and tightened the clip up to a snug fit.
No more whooshing! :)
Anyway, here's a pic of my new girl playing in the snow on Saturday (went with the General Grabbers and so had to test them out - seem to do the job). 5 minutes later I had her hitched nose to nose with a Shogun to help it pull some little twit in a Kia C'eed up a hill and out of snow drift he had driven into... nae bother!!:thumbs

With live axles front and rear it's fair to see she'll spend some time getting dirty :D
Apart from sticking an A-bar/Bull Bar on her though I don't plan on doing much else to her, thought about a lift, maybe 2", but she's my only vehicle and even standard with sidesteps some of the older family members will have issues getting into her!
Me and the lass are planning on doing the Vampire 4x4 tour to Transylvania though, should be ace in the 'trol!
