incidentally had a Green Deal energy assessment done and I got 81 which is bottom of B group A being highest and G lowest so wood/solid fuel stove = very good, Rick

it is total crap but the powers that be like crap, so we give it them and if it makes life a little easier great, this I can see going the same way as the energy surveys that were going to be required when you put your house on the market, forget what it was called but absolute nonsense, Rick

yep part heats our water as well, but only put water tank at rear, need to do both sides as well to get maximum gain, water tanks are in place of the fire bricks, Rick

Glass can still be had, www.fastglass.co.uk will cut to spec if they don't have your stove listed. A number of stoves can have the strips replaced with a single sheet these days too.

That's a bit of a blatant plug as the company linked belongs to my brother, but I doubt I'd manage to get you guys a discount as he's tight as a ducks ar$e!

Latest govt energy package thing. Basically they're offering very cheap loans to get your house energy efficient. the pay back is based on what you savings will be . End result is you pay it back at the level of expenditure you have now. so in 5 years or whatever your new goodies are all yours and you then get the cheap running benefits.
They're meant to fund anything that's practicle on your house as long as it really does save you money.
Look it up on google :thumb2

I bought our Charnwood multi fuel back boiler a few years ago, it cost me £100 and is a god send this time of year, I have never bought wood, my mate has a window firm and I'm always darting into woods when out on my rounds.
Helps living opposite woods as well:thumb2:thumb2

To clean glass on log burner try damp cloth and ash from the inside.
works for me.

Got my assessment next week guy called tom jones if nowt else he can give us a song
Just had a bloke on my doorstep try to sell me cavity wall insulation under the green deal scheme wouldnt listen when i kept telling him all the houses around here where built as a model village in the early 1900s and are of solid wall construction he pointed to a missing mortar joint and said thats my cavity at that i told him to stop wasting my time and go away
Looks like the green deal is bringing the con men out

gas prices are sky high.
2 billion in profit in one year.
im 44 by the time im 65 at a 15% average price rise per year.I will freeze to death.
I am deffo scrapping my gas fire this year in favor of a multi fuel stove.
ive already burnt one to death in my greenhouse(more like a conservatory)
from free fuel ive picked up over the years.
I am not going to go cold I do enough of that workin outdoors.

well it turns out the rayburn burner does have the back boiler built into it, so how do i go about plumbing it in? i only want it on the rads? also the flue hole in top is 6" internal dia,

First stick with 6 inch flue you will have problems if you make it smaller, re your plumbing this will depend a lot on what you have now, but you have to build in a safety factor, you cannot just rely on a pump and pipe stat, what happens in a power cut and you are out? plumbimg is my game so if you want to tell me your existing system and house layout I can guide you through, Rick

makeitfit
07-03-2013, 21:55
Bit of a bitch to advise without seeing you existing C/H layout. Assuming you'#ve got a pumped system allready then you'll need some motorised Y valves so you can join the rayburn into the system instead of your existing boiler. It can also be done on thermo to so the valves open and pump comes on when the water is hot.
Look up a few typical dual heating source schematics on google :thumbs

ummmm, we have a combi boiler that runs 8 rads, 3 downstairs 5 upstairs, thats all i can think of right now its been a long long day lol

solarman216
07-03-2013, 23:54
Combi probably means it is a sealed system, not good for a wood burner, ideally it needs a stainless header tank with a ball valve on the mains to keep it topped up and also a break tank on gravity to take heat in the event of power failure, to be safe it can be quite complicated, but no way would I link it into a sealed system, if you have the space your safest and most efficient bet is to install a separate system on gravity that way you have no worries at all even with the fire full bore, Rick

spiderpig37
08-03-2013, 01:00
I run a parkray with back boiler with a header tank and cylinder i too have looked at linking it with a gas boiler it can be done but is quite complicated and expensive think the only way is too decide if you go gas or solid fuel or just use the rayburn as a fire

Bound to be expensive as it's AGA :lol
However it can be done and you will need to put a HW tank back in too.
I know a few green plumbers round here who've combined solar and combi systems but as said before there's a lot of plumbing to get it right.

hi,i have a oil set up and a wood burner with a back boiler all linked up using a H2 Panel.
google it.
it works a dream.
with all fires on the wood burner goes to preheat oil so saves a lot,not cheap but safe.

makeitfit
08-03-2013, 11:06
Ah now if you want to pre heat oil then use old engine oil for fuel. Now that is cheap or free :sly
Friend of mine up the road gets all his c/h free using waste engine oil and waste wood from the tip.
He's not quite off grid but very cheap to keep:clap

just be careful as running it with out water could damage the bolier as the heat could buckle the back bolier might be wrong but just something to think about:thumbs

definitely do not light it with no water supply connected it will destroy the water jacket, Rick
