Had a couple of zx's myself you will struggle to find a more reliable car than that id keep it for when the t2 breaks down:lol
Yep good motors, weak head gasket.

in 30 years of bx zx cx only 1 head went and that was my fault.
i would keep the zx as my run around but i will have to pay 70 for a parking permit on top of tax and mot.
being as i will do most of my miles towing the van it does not warrant the cost.

Tax?
Tyres condition
Exhaust?
Any known faults
Does it have a bosch fuel pump (this one is important to me)
Turbo or non turbo?
number of doors?
The sister in law is after a cheap run around right now.

The head that did go, would have been a turbo diesel right? XUD TD is well known for it. It is not if, but when. I would say in my experience of these engines and talking to a customer who rebuilds cylinder heads that 110-150k is a reasonable window to expect it to go.
Like I said before, I like the cars, I prefered the ZX I owned to the 306 but both were TD's and both heads went. If the job is done properly then the engine will do another 100k+.
If you cant do it yourself its a 400-500 quid garage bill. At that point most get scrapped.

The main problem is previous owners have not changed the antifreeze/coolant often enough or at high enough concentrate. Or worse, only used water.

ad ent,no it was an 1700 non td.i thought i had a very slight water pump leak as it was leaking for many miles, but it turned out to be the main feed hose to the pump at the pump end and on a run it gave way and i limped home topping up as i needed, did not get home but stopped befor it cooked.went to collect it topped up with water and had a gusher from rad cap, and head had gone.
it did not take me to long to strip and get head skimmed then rebuild.went for many miles after till i went up to a 1900td,for towing.
on the cx i had a spark plug melt and a bit got stuck on a valve so it only fired at higher revs so took it apart and repaired it,put valve in lathe and straightened reground refitted and good to go.
