my terrano is relatively new ( to us that is) 12 years old lol.
I found out the speedo is out by 8 mph. 30 is actually 38 confirmed by my sat nav.
would this be due to the tyres? they are 235/17r16

Could you re quote the tyre size, what does the 17 represent 17% of the width?? I don't think so.
If you measure the circumference, then you can compare.
In fact there are sites that give you this information.
However 8 mph in 30 is huge, you would need bus tyres for that error?
edit...
It's not an import is it, with a label stuck over the dial?
Is the odometer in miles?

Hmm good one but people often compare Sat Nav's to Speedo's which is a pet hate of mine. Normally Speedo's say you are doing 30 but Sat Nav's say 25. Personally I'd rather trust the speedo. Not heard of one reading over and to that extent. What year is your Terrano? I'm sure someone will come back and tell you about tyre/wheel sizes but yes they can cause speedo to read incorrect but unsure to what extent.
Can a garage with MOT Brake test pop it on and test speed against your speedo perhaps?
A friend with another car perhaps run at exactly 30 in front of you perhaps compare?
Speedo's by law can over-read but they are not allowed to under-read. GPS (sat-nav) speed will be slower to update but will be 100% accurate.
It's normal.
Police cars have calibrated speedos, T2's don't, GPS is calibrated. Terrano speedo is a joke, of all the cars I've tested a GPS App in, It's by far the worse. Mine is on standard 16" wheels and tyres, 235/70/16. 90=80 80mph=70mph 60mph=53mph Bigger the tyres the better it will be.
'Makeitfit' will be along soon with a cure..... :naughty
The Big question is.... Have our T2's done LESS Miles than it shows??????? I'm testing this tomorrow.....
Here's one to try...

I run 33's and my speedo according to the street speeds radars, my satnav and a local traffic plod i know is spot on 30mph when the speedo says 30mph, for it to be doing 38 at 30 on standard tyres is an odd one to me
Could you re quote the tyre size, what does the 17 represent 17% of the width?? I don't think so.
i think he means 75
mine is not far off 38 at 30. I'll check and report back.

Just tested using Samsung Galaxy 2 and the GPS speedometer App:
At Indicated 40mph the GPS showed 33mph
At Indicated 37mph the GPS showed 30mph
At Indicated 30mph the GPS showed 22mph

Just tested using Samsung Galaxy 2 and the GPS speedometer App:
The thing it, I thought I read somewhere that by law they are not supposed to be more than 10% out
So worst case
At Indicated 40mph the GPS showed 33mph Speedo should show 36
At Indicated 37mph the GPS showed 30mph Speedo should show 33
At Indicated 30mph the GPS showed 22mph Speedo should show 24
Still, on the plus side, we have no excuses to get pulled for speeding, and I now feel bad for harassing so many T2's in the past, that were only doing 22 in a 30...:lol

I thought this was a common problem with several 4x4's.
My 2004, 3L Terrano reads 36 @ 30mph this is 20% error! (legal max error +10%). It improves the faster I go: maybe reads correct at about 120? LOL. Strangely the milometer is nowhere near as bad. This is on standard (original) tyres.
My previous Frontera was just as bad, but at least it's stopped me getting done by the cameras LOL. At one time (when the sender unit was playing up) it would occasionally display up to 50mph standing still!
I know use a sat nav all the time just for the speed reading.
Don't understand how Nissan etc. get away with it. Technically I (we!) could be prosecuted for this error.

thanks for the comments.
the only reason i new the speedo was out to start with was the thingy at the side of the road you get telling you your speed.
it was telling me i was doing about 23 at 30 on the clock and the sat nav confirmed it.
im not too concerned about it. but I will look into it more as I do want my truck in tip top running order but not that bothered about cosmetics. as i brought it with the idea that 4x4s are meant for a bit of rough and tumble.

Same here. Thingy at the side of the road is always about 8 mph lower than my speedo. Speedo on an 92 micra I use is the same. Mazda b2500 I used to use same also. It can be handy though as I don't know how many times I have passed a speed camera a few miles over the limit and breathed a sigh of relief when I remembered that my speedo is over-reading by 8 mph or so and I'm in the clear.
ok so ur speedo says ur doin 30 and satnav says u aint? its getttin confusing now because before it was being said that speedo reads 30 satnav reads above, if ya sat nav is reading lower than ya speedo then its common with most cars, i've had at least five cars where the speedo says 30 but the satnav says 25, its all to do with tyres sizes,,,,,,,,,look it up

Don't have sat nav. Tyres are standard as per manufacture spec. Maybe speed thingys on road side are set a bit high?

doesn't answer the question tho,,,,is ya speedo readin higher than ur actual speed or lower than ur actual speed? as said its tyre sizes i run 33's they run about spot on so when my speedo says i'm doing 30 or 70 thats the speed i'm doing

Sorry! Your'e right. I got it wrong way round. The original question was as you say, speedo reading too low not too high. Tyre size would seem the most obvious reason. Thanks for the correction.

Again, your'e correct. When I did increase tyre size for a while speedo was more or less in line with speed signs on side of road.
ok so solution is what every one said lol, standard tyres on the terrano you think you're doing 30mph but u aint its more like 25mph, biger tyres adjust this tho, i run 33's and my speed is aboust as acurate as it can be, i do 30mph it reads 30mph on a radar gun (thanks to plod i know) and the street signs that flash the speed at ya it also is same at 70mph

A bit of a tangent I know but anywhere on here you have posted a picture of your truck with those Kuhmo 33's. Would like to see that.

right did a steady motorway journey. Google maps had it at 45 miles. I zero`d the trip.. At journeys end it read 49.7miles. Out by 4.7miles on a 45mile journey.
Based on that, our T2's have done 10% less miles than it shows on the clock. This affects MPG calculations too.

This is a very good point.
I have known that my speedo is out by 11% since the day I bought her. I'm not the only one either.
Its no problem at any speed as I compensate accordingly
Speedo 78 mph = actual 70 (11%)
Speedo 70 mph = actual 63 (11%)
Speedo 33.5 mph = actual 30 (11%)
My bus has done a recorded 105k miles = actual 94.5k :thumb2
My calculated MPG is 25 around town 28 on a run = actual 22.5mpg and 25 :(
It is worth considering.

mate I am loving those tyres.
I will be looking for a new set later in the year.
couple of questions for ya.
will they go straight on a standard terrano or do you have to mess about with truck height, shocks or anythin like that?
and performace,do they use much more fuel?whats the expected lifespan in miles?and last but not least whats the cost?
cheers mate.

body lift is needed have to remove mud flaps then have to let mr angle grinder and mrs hammer have a chat around the front wheel arches and mr angle grinder need to trim the front bumper, you will need to mod fron and rear bumper for them to fit properly, the front bumper wont fit back on and back bumper will just look silly (i call it the saggy arse effect) the tyres i have cost about £137 a corner new but u can get a set on ebay alot cheaper if you get part worns.
all details of what i dont to mine are in my sig, but because i went overkill on my body lift i had to attack the inside of the truck around the transfer lever so i could get it into 4low, that pic there i'm actualy in 4high as i hadn't modded the lever yet
heres is a vid with ramsden road in it, i'm not in this vid its just one i found on youtube :lol

fuel econimy?
tread wear lifetime?will they do more than 3k on tarmac?
oh and road noise?
and whats the cost of a 3inch jack up kit?
ive got a good hammer and a very worn grinder.
i might need more info on where to whack and cut and pray for no rusty or easy snappy bits.
and like all my new hobbys I usualy get carried away, blow a small fortune.
but this time its the one and only toy in the family.
and also its the family go anywhere car that I rely on for work rest and play.
fuel for work doesnt cost so much as its tax deductable,
I can go and collect my earnings even in blizzard conditions, its versitile enough with the seating arangments for adventure camping trips.
i love my trerrano.
