View Full Version : Newbie from Southampton.
Hi Folks after many years with Sports cars I’ve decided to move onto something a bit slower that I can get muddy. Last year was looking at getting a 4x4 but decided it would cost too much to run so stupidly bought a Impreza Turbo which is ridiculous in fuel cost and rather boring to drive since it may have 220BHP but with the power steering and AWD its too easy to drive fast unlike the non turbo RWD cars I have owned in the past.
ANYWAY I’m looking to trade in the impreza for a Mavrick/Terrano 2.7TDi and wondered if there is anything I should look out for or if someone in the Southampton area could show me around there’s to give me a better idea please.
I understand the 2.7D is a taxi engine and there are subtle differences in that the early ones didn’t have bonnet vents but also not sure if the suspension is modern spring like car or the ridged leaf spring like Land Rovers?

WELCOME M8 :thumbs
Re Suspension:-
Torsion bar on the front, coil on the rear.
Welcome to the club
Look out for rust on the front wings, starting at the plastic wheel arches, rust around the rear seat belt fixings, these appear in the rear wheel arches.
Inner front wings too, also the front out riggers that support the front bumper and the front cross member.
Have a good look around the front body mounts where the body bolts to the chassis.
I am speaking from other members problems, NOT my problems, of my nearly 18 year old Maverick, as that is still immaculate.
Waxoyl and a warm de- humidified garage all help to keep it that way.
Can't wait for the salt to go so I can wash all this crap off it, especially underneath. It will get a rinse tomorrow though....
Rock it from side to side, might have a click or two, could be your front drop links, but cheap to replace.
hope this helps...
best regards,
Rustic

Rust is a big enemy if they havn't been looked after. Most of the spots aren't too bad to sort. Obviously newer the better for that.
Sometimes you find 4wd never been used so front hubs may have a fault or just a clean. Never use the 4wd on a hard surface, the wheels need to be able to slip a little to stop wind up.
2.7 TD upto 1996 and then 2.7TDi onwards. Easy to tell the TDIi has a big vent in the bonnet. Approx 2001 the 3litre TD was introduced, slightly better fuel economy. Both pretty strong power plants, the 2.7 is gear driven timing so no belts or rattling chains. They also did a 2.4 petrol, again a strong unit.
I've had mine for 11 years and love it to bit's, really trust it in the snow.
This looks intersting.

I think from photo may have had some bodywork done on passenger side but is it still a fair price?
Are the Petrol ones worth looking at or bit more expensive to run than the 2.7Tdi?
Seen a few at private sale ones nearer ans cheaper.

Petrol are more fuel hungry than the diesel, but the high torque comes in lower down, you need to hear the car start after several hours standing, if it rattles then timing chain & tensioners gone, common problem which even the modified set up has failed to cure long term, also big end shells most times need replacing, Rick

having said all that I ran a 2.4 on a sump full of water for over half an hour while winching, drained it and changed the filter, and it did two more meetings and still runs, rattles on startup but quiet after that, very hardy engines, oh and re LWB SWB see the thread "Got Stuck" by "stinka", Rick

Is it me or is the NS Sill got a red oxide type colour at the back? I guess if lucky it's been plated or worst a crap repair. Is this the paintwork that you were talking about?
Yes thats the repair by the looks of it. Seems a bit hight priced if it has had bodywork done?
Tbh the Lwb is hardly long at 104 inches compaired to say a landcruiser

£1500 max

Sharp eyes Jim strikes again.:thumbs
If they haven't tried to hide it, it should be easier to find other repairs:doh
The SWB is more prone to rust in that area than the LWB, for some unknown reason...
Might be in the construction, as the LWB has a door above this sill.
I presume the Maverick and terrano 2.7Tdi are the same except the the badge but the mavericks seem cheaper?
Also what is the cheapest way to lift them body lift or suspention lift or is it the same thing?

Suspension lift first, body only needed for 33" tyres

Welcome...
How much difference is there between a Nissan patrol & a Terrano Swb?
I presume the Terrano would drive more car like?
Even looking at Rav 4 lwb now but think diesel is the way to go.
Rav4 is a pretend offroader tbh
Patrol is the way to go, if u can find a solid example y60 gq
If u go y61 avoid 3.0 diesel as its a bit of a problem lump
Terranos are very capable offroad tho
It will mostly get used on the road its just for some of the rutted muddy farm tracks and fields getting to shoots. Since I have found the Impreza may be awd but the turbo kicks in and its all wheel spin and lack of ground clearance.

Y60 4.2D Patrol. But then I'm biased. :D
Do the Patrols suffer from Tin worm like the terrano?
If that's your requirement then get a Terrano, as you'll get a newer car for the money
Do the Patrols suffer from Tin worm like the terrano?
Yep. All nissans do :D
Going to take a look at this hopefully what do folk think?
Sounds a bit too good on paper?

hi & welcome :thumb2
body lift will skin u bout £100 quid from milners, suspension i spent £230 on +2" shocks & springs from bloodred, torsion bars just wind up.
when ur looking stick you hand up behind the back bumper as if you're heading for the top back lights, thats where the rear body mounts are, mine were rotten!
if you see one with a clutch problem come back here & tell us the symptoms cos is most likely the dampner pipe or the flexi easy peasy fixes (don't tell the seller that tho) lol
