Aye, there's a few names I know from the borders4x4 forum I'm on. It's more local to my area.

And out of interest, how did you find it?

Ah, fair enough and I see what you're saying

Can you not just combine the database's ?

That way posts would not be lost and it would preserve the info/history with in this site

I'll bet you could add the sub forums into the relevant sub forum posts on this site in MySQL

MySQL

what's that?

stinka
26-12-2012, 22:47
what's that?

A database managment system, forums use it.

I don't know much about it, I used to admin a forum with a couple of geeky mates, one of them was into all this and used to run queries and merge data and run scripts to do stuff.

I'm guessing bat21 knows a little about administrating his forum, perhaps not about the database but his hosting company will
And there is usually a help wizard type setup to guide you through the more advanced stuff

I certainly have no desire to. Although many folks on there were also members here at the time, many on there were not. It would be a logistical nightmare having to contact those who weren't as I would need their permission to move them here before doing so.

what's that?
mySQL is a 'cut down' version of Microsoft's SQL (structured query language). It is basically what sits behind the sceenes and 'drives' this place. It is the database, I guess you could call vBulletin the management system.

Having been doing this for 10+ years, yes, I know a bit :thumb2

As far as asking the hosting company goes, well that would be me ;)

I've just logged on there and been reading a few PM's from 5 years ago..... one guy gave me some right grief back then but we kissed and made up eventually :D

FairPlay mate, you know more than I do then :D

You have your own dedicated server then for hosting ? Or do you run a hosting company ?

This Club was started back in 2004. Then in 2008 there was a lot of dummy spitting and handbag swinging, the owner then threatened to bin the site unless someone came up with £5k to buy it..... no one came forward so, as I was already a member with experience, I stepped up to the mark and payed the man.

It will be 4 years in April, our little bump (http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/morocco09/) was in April 2009

If you have a dedicated server then I assume you have masses of spare bandwidth (judging by my own experiences of running a busier forum just with a slot on a server somewhere)

Might I suggest removing the 20 second wait between searches, as I'm sure it would have no ill effect and for me personally its a bloody pain :D, what do you think ?

Search limit now 5 seconds, let me know if you have any problems :thumbs

Vbulletin is the best forum application, and there's loads behind the scenes, especially for the admin

You'd love it Ryan :D you feel like dr evil in his massive leather chair :lol

But the reality of running a forum is far more stressful, you cannot please all the people all the time, you cannot be arrogant, you have to be laid back, especially with changes and moderation and this is where he problems can occur

Tbf tho this forum kind of runs its self, its a knowledge base so its pretty much just housekeeping

The problems come on larger forums where u have groups of cliques and people with very different opinions and where there's is a large social element. Also when admins try to implement changes, as most people simply hate change :D

A forum I was involved with changed owners about 4 times in 6 years, there was a breakaway forum, at one point every one then came back only to return to the breakaway :lol but what finished it was when my headstrong partner decided to implement the vb4 upgrade ... Everyone left, as it was a forum skin that was unfamiliar

This forum is great IMO, it helps that its just a resource for like minded Nissan owners

One thing I wished is that this forum was mobile supported, so it would fit a mobile screen nicely, as its a popular forum and I've seen less popular forums that worked in mobile browsers:thumb2

Please consider bat :thumbs
