View Full Version : wanted - EGR blanking plate
chaps!
I really want to get my EGR done, but i need a blanking plate to slide in between the egr and manifold, anybody got one they can sell me?
cant find any on fleabay...!!
Make one :D
Or take off your egr valve and take it to a local engineer shop and tell them to knock up 2 4mm plates for you, thats what i did last week, cost me a tenner
I bolted them in place with 700 degree copper rtv and did away with the egr valve altogether
fair point!
how difficult is it to actually remove the egr? The guide in Downloads doesnt show this, and i'd really like to actually remove it for cleaning...

its a right twat to get off. Dont bother cleaning it, waste of time. If you are removing it then plate the holes back up, dont put it back on
ahh hbugger, I was hoping it would be relatively easy to remove.
im starting to think about selling up.:lol

What material is best to use ali or steel if there worth £10 a set ill get some lasered out.
let me know, because sliding in a blanking plate both ends of the egr is better than struggling to take it out...

I did not find it as difficult to remove the EGR entirely, at least as much as I was anticipating it to be based on all the comments on the forum. I do have a very nice set of ratcheting end wrenches, which helped inmensely. :thumbs
I used a piece of 4 mm stainless plate that I happen to have. I traced the pattern onto the plate from the EGR valve and in only a couple of minutes of work with angle grinder and a 1mm metal cutting disk I had a couple of plates. I sanded the edges and just epoxied the one plate on the intake manifold side. The other side from the exhaust manifold needs to be bolted on--with just epoxy it lasted over 500 miles but it was scary when it came loose. The next one I made, I bolted on. It is not a hard job to do at all.

I slid one in at first but you need to get some copper rtv on it as well to ensure its gas tight, this is why you're best to remove it and blank it with 4mm plate, otherwise you'll rub all the paste off when u slide it in

4mm steel

Kamsin did a 'how to' video a while back that he uploaded to YouTube.
Here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEPJxLE5GYY
thanks for the replies guys. I have seen Kamsins video, and I was worried that the EGR removal really WAS as difficult as he said it was!! ah well, Ill just have to get in there and do it, thats next weekends job.
I got the bottom bolts from the top side, i just reached under the inlet manifold with a 12mm deep socket and a ratchet, was a pain in the arse tho lol
do you mean the two I can see, drivers side, on the side of the inlet manifold, or are there some underneath that I cant see?
hard to tell in Kamsins video

no those are the easy ones, there are some underneath connected to a flange/pipe that runs to the exhaust manifold
ah right i see, dammit. do I need to remove the wheel/inner lining to get to it?
this is where i got my blanking plates / kit from for my bighorn .... hope it helps clive , hes very good . , not sure if he does a terrano one , but no harm in asking him

Up to you, like I said I just reached under the inlet manifold with a 12mm deep socket on a ratchet
gotcha, im doing it this weekend along with a full service and lsd oil change. hoping to really improve the performance of the car.

Just took one off. What happens about the pipe running to the exhaust if you remove it completly my worry would be although its a fairly think pipe if its not supported the vibration from the engine will eventialy cause it to crack and fail unless its properly supported.I think if i were doing it would use some 1mm copper and slide it in one side and leave the valve in place the copper will also act as good gasket to seal gasses

I just left the pipe loose, it sits on top of the bell housing. I thought about tieing it up to the bracket on the block with some wire coat hanger or sommit, but I've left it for now. Mine had some up and down movment anyway, like it was lose on the exhaust anifold, not sure how it attaches exhast side as i think its under the turbo heat shiel, didnt have a proper look just figured i'd keep my eye on it and listen for a developing blow and perhaps weld sommit over it depending on how it attaches to the manifold/turbo etc
ok, i still need a blanking plate. I cant get one made myself, and i cant buy one. I have been in touch with a guy on Ebay, but he wants dimensions, which I dont have.
can anyone make me one?

i'm also wanting to do the ejr blanking but haven't had the balls yet until i'm 100% sure what to do! is it just a matter of unbolting the egr ans putting a plate in then putting the egr back on to make it look normal? if that's all, i might have a go:)

basically yes ..... allthough you may need longer bolts to bolt the egr back on .... i had my egr valves ( i had 2 ) completely removed and the blanking plate put over the holes using the original bolts

sorry:augie i mean bighorn:D
yes Ryan, it really is that simple. a little awkward as far as I can see, but i had a good look at the weekend, and i reckon it can be done through the top using a thin but decent quality long wrench, 1/4" so it will fit. Two bolts, slide in the blanking plate, bolt back up. MIGHT have to loosen off at the exhaust side for movement, im not 100% sure yet, but shouldnt be too tricky if that is the case.
Peter, yes, i emailed the chap, he doesnt have any, and can only make one if i can get the dimensions ?!

i tried to take the egr off my scrappy but because theres no gear box, the engine has fell back against the bulkhead, so i couldnt get dimentions:doh i would think they are just the same on th TD and TDI
the egr looks fairly simple to get from under the wheel arch, i can actually get my arm right up between the starter and engine and feel the bolts,, thats the good thing about having long thin arms:clap:lol:lol
clive get me dimensions and i will make you one at work (free).. and half dozen more for other people posted for £1 each. i have a lazer at my disposel
send me a text clive if you get the dimensions as i dont sign in here often

Does the EGR have a gasket? if so could you get a new one and use it as a template for a blanking plate :nenau
Even post it to Larson, to take up his very generous offer :thumb2

All very well but you need sealant of some sort or you'll probably get a boost leak from the inlet manifold side, its no different to bolting up the inlet manifold to the head and u wouldn't do that without a gasket
I used copper rtv in the end and blanked both sides doing away with the egr valve

copper rtv will be fine
fair enough:thumb2
so on Egr when stopping in my newer T2 I get not all the time Engine judder like could stall
Never noticed in my 98 one if you drive like you have just passed you test today stopping in the gear you are in like 3rd its better, but i passed early 80's. I am a go down the gears trying to change because wife did advanced driving and its about saving fuel. and brake are better ABS Until a new driver runs into the back of you on a steep down hill in 4th
