Hi all,

I checked my bank statement last night, budget insurance had taken over £270 from my account??
So I rang them, why said I, cos your policy ran out so we renewed it for you she said.:doh
OK sounds reasonable, but the vehicle, my old peugeot van had been off the road and sorned for 8 months.
I did not want it renewed I said it is off the road, OK she said there will be a £30 cancellation fee, you had a letter reminding you she said.:doh
No letter had come,
Moral of the long winded tirade is do NOT pay with a debit card.
I have now to send them my sorn to prove it was taken off the road, I do not plan to let them get away with it, but guess it is a lesson to be learned.:doh
Hopefully this will put the rest of you on your guard.
Have any of you had the same happen and how did you get your money back?:bow:bow

Or you could put a note in the calendar to warn your insurance is due to run out in, say four weeks. This would then provide you with the initiative to shop around before your policy is due for renewal.

As you have discovered to your cost, there is no benefit in trusting them to act morally, ethically, or sometimes legally.

I'd rather be reinsured automatically than forget to do it myself. However I do agree that a 30 quid admin is taking the P a bit. Write to the financial ombudsman or ring them up. I've used them and very helpful. It'll take 8 weeks to act but you ring up the insurance co and tell them you've contacted the FSA and bingo 30 refund :thumbs

my point was that the OP has suffered a penalty because... perhaps a letter has been lost in the post, or similar, and now has to deal with the effect rather than preventing the problem in the first instance.

I'd just kick up a stink about how I never requested the policy to be automatically renewed so there for I will not pay a cancellation fee & wish for the deposit to be refunded as they done this without your permission.

I had this very issue with AutoNet Insurance.

They were told in no uncertain terms to "whistle for it"

Swinton tried the same 3 days ago, they took £93 as a "pre renewal fee"

My arse, money was returned to my account that day.

Disgraceful
