Just parted company with some old but worn out bags which
had a label 44oz, most new bags are described as x gsm
ie 300 grams per aquare metre.

any idea how I convert oz to gsm.

I did use a once to gram convertor but my 44 oz equated
to 1247 grams which doesnt sound right unless 44 is total
weight and if divide by approx 4 metres of material gives
approx 300 gsm ???

These days there should be a range of rating for comfort/limit/extreme for the average man (woman do need a higher spec bag and some manufacturers do give women specific ratings). Buy a bag based on how cold the surrounding temperature will be in your tent/van/etc. and make sure that is at least the comfort rating.

Limit rating is how low you can get before feeling pretty cold, and extreme is the temp that you can go down to before you will start to suffer from hyperthermia. (I've seen cheap bags in Tesco that have an extreme rating of +2C! Must be basically a sheet)

Also worth knowing that a silk liner can add a few degrees to any bag as will a fleece one (although these are bulky) but a cotton one really just keeps the bag a bit cleaner.
