personally, i would go for a 2.7 every time. The engine it was designed and built for. Rather than one 'shoe-horned' in out of another vehicle, with all this issues it can bring.

but others may disagree :nenau

Thanks!

Where does the 3litre come from then?

the 3.0 tdi zd originated in the y61 patrol around 2000MY.

when its good its very good, but when it isnt....

to be fair by time terrano gained it as an option the main
issues had been ironed out.

having had one in a troll, and funded nissan's research lol
i'm more than happy with the 2.7 in the terrano which is
my second.

ok zd makes more power, but the 2.7 can keep up by
use of the loud pedal.

need to remember that that bit of economy might not
be achieved as might play with it more plus open heart
surgery is more complicated and the booked time for
say head gasket is 13 hours versus 7 on 2.7 which will
add up if a garage is doing work etc.

even the thermostat is a pig as its located at bottom of engine
compared to at top on 2.7....

I owned a 2.7 for 7 years and it was a very good engine, I found it did struggle a bit when towing my caravan up hills, but it did pull well on anything other than a steep gradient.
I have owned my 2005 3.0 for a few months now and the fuel consumption is better than my old 2.7, I like the smoothness of the 3.0 engine, it has more pull with less stress. There is quite a lot on here about problems with poor running 2.7's....loss of power and things like that, I never had problems with my 2.7 though.
I can only go on what I have noticed between the 2 cars and for me the 3.0 is a better/smoother engine with more pulling power, oh and it's a lot less rustier on the under side than my 2001 2.7 was:thumb2.

I think both are good, I have the 3.0 and it never feels stressed, load the car up to the roof and it makes no difference to performance or economy, I guess a fully loaded terrano still weighs less than the patrol so that may be why! I get great mpg from the 3.0, done 75k miles with no problems. People's comments about head gaskets scare me though, has anyone had one go on a 3.0? And if so at what sort of mileage did it go?

I know a few folks with 3.0's and i find they seem to rattle when they rev :nenau

Engine aside: of all the diff and axle woes I have seen on here they have all been 3.0's! And after helping a fellow member to source a new axle (second hand) found they are a different ratio, scarce and expensive

my troll needed HG, got top off to find 3 out of 4 pistons cracked, so rebuilt with new.

later multiple sensors around air flow needed, lost faith and weighed it in against
newer terrano 2.7, going back to what I'd had and had been happy with.

the troll kerb is 2500 or so, with gvw 3500, whilst zd was good when it was, it
always felt like it needed a bigger lump, I mourned the passing of the 6pot 4.2 td
as no substitute for cubes etc. plus zd looked odd under that big bonnet made
for a straight 6.

despite experiences, i wouldnt discount having a zd t2 but still need to factor increased
servicing costs down line on older trucks.
