so, have any of you guys ever bought a car at an auction?

I am having to sell my lovely MX3 as I simply cant afford to run it, so I need to replace it with Mr Sensible. Plenty to choose form on ebay and autotrader/Gumtree, but today I thought "hey, what about an actual auction?"

There is a big one in brighouse near me, with weekly auctions, shed loads of cars, but I have never bought this way before, anyone done it and have advice? What sort of money we talking at auction, is it even worth it?

I will be looking for cheap cars, my budget is minimal....!

I enquired one at local bca commision was very high bit of a rip off really because they charge you to put it in then commission if it sells then they charge the buyer a buyers premium.Would put it on ebay 99p no reserve get plenty of interest then sell it before auction ends to one of the many people that will ask you "do you have a buy now price"

Hi im in the trade and buy at auction every week but be very aware! always check no engine management lights on and i always look at the interior of a car to give me an indication on how ots been looked after but always try to buy ebay private first you can always give it a test drive beleive me ive dropped a few very expensive clangers!!!

Why not see if you can swap it for something sensible ? Check Ebay motors for "no swap swops". ("swops" is often included to attract the attention of the illiterate masses who do not realise or care that while phonetically correct, spelling the word swap in this way is just wrong).

thanks for the replys guys, I may have a wonder down to an auction to see what its all about (to be clear to some, I am looking to BUY at auction, not sell, I have a buyer for my Mazda)

I will also give more consideration to a private seller!!

Ah i thought you were selling the mazda. Before bidding ask about buyers premium they dont advertise this very well last time i bought car at auction the premium started about £50 so if you bid a quid it costs you 51 but the premium is on sliding scale and could run into hundreds

If you have an account the premiums are reduced depending on how many cars you buy per year.Funny thing is last time i went the cars were making nearly as much as at garage and far more than ebay and as already mentioned you can try the car on ebay the ones in the auction only has to have 1 gear and will quite happily trundle through the ring with blow headgasket

Iv had two cars from auction.

It really is a game of pay your money and make your choice, unless your looking at ex fleet vehicles, as they normally have full service history.

Oh yes, my cars

Landrover 300TDI cost me £2100. Worst car iv ever owned.

Ford Escort estate. cost me £800 and was fantastic, never cost me a penny, sold it my sister and in turn she sold it a bloke down the road from me and it got rear ended after about another year later..
