Does anyone know what "Assisted GPS" is on mobile phones. Surely it's either GPS or not? I was told by someone at work today that it's not GPS but location via the cells of the phone network.

It is indeed location derived from cell positions as well as true GPS and wifi where available.
The combination of all three provides assisted GPS, gives a much faster location rather than wait for the GPS receiver to find enough satellites for a precise location. Especially useful if the phone cant see the sky!

You can usually turn the assisted bit off for that very same reason lol
