AVG alternative ?

Calling all computer types :)
I've got a little tablet pc for mapping in the truck. It's fine for that but a bit slow at 1.3 thingy hurts processor :nenau Any way AVG keeps on "updating" and when it's not doing that it'll be scanning :doh
Any less hungry anti virus dodas anyone knows about please? :D
Not microsoft essential though that sucked up ALL the poor little processor's ability to breath :o

Smallest performance footprint for Windows kit (and incidentally one of the best at the job) is Eset's NOD32 Antivirus. Been using it for years and it's superb. But you do have to pay. Check them out here: www.eset.co.uk/Home

just use Microsoft Security Essentials. Its pretty light weight but very good. I have it on my pc's, never bothers me except when its blocking something. Updates itself, tells you when there is an issue, but leaves you alone. For free, I think its the best you can get,

I tried that essentials but the poor little tablet was consumed by it. It kept using 100% cpu doing some process I forget what it was called now. I ended the process time and time again and then it just switched itself back on again:o sod that:confused:
So that's why I binned it as I could never actually use the tablet :doh

If you only use the tablet for mapping, why would you need an anti virus suit? You could run an AV prog from a thumb drive and run it weekly.
At present I use Avast free which is not too slowing on the system. Best of luck , David.

Ta for that I've just found the vast av :thumb2 It's MAINLY mapping but as it's got wifi and blue tooth etc seemed a waste not to be able to use it now and then while out on manouvers.

I'd just use AVG when at home, but turn it off when out and about using mm

you can set it when you want to scan and update.

I use Avast as I found it to be the better of the free ones. However when you've installed it go in to the user interface and switch the 'silent/gaming' mode on otherwise it will lock your processor everytime it wants to display a nice little message.

Most anti-virus programs also have problems when they are trying to update and can't so sit there hogging your resources. If you aren't connected to the internet all the time set it to manual updates only. You just have to remember to do it :doh
