Newbie - West Wales Maverick

Howdy folks

Glad I found this site. I was worried about finding technical info for my new purchase!

I bid blind on Ebay and got myself a Maverick for half a grand. Thankfully it seems quite good! She's a 2.4i swb GLX with 95k on the clock.

Drove the 60 miles home with no issues other than squeaky wipers (already sorted). Wasn't hanging about, so quite pleased that the lairy back end seemed nicely unlairy!

Really pleased with it, especially the way it drives. Very different to the Rangie I had last year - though the Range Rover had a much more comfortable ride. Mav isn't as choppy as I feared though.

Issues:
1) Could do with a service (oil recommendations welcomed - I think I'll do the diff oil too!).
2) Stat possibly needs changing? Doesn't really rise above 1/3 on the gauge. Plan to change the coolant regardless.
3) Rear washer isn't working. I think the one-way valve near the top of the door is broken. Took ages to get it out...
4) Heater works on fastest setting only. Pretty common I think?

There are a few other minor gremlins. One of the headlamp washers has broken and fires straight up into the air! The rear wiper doesn't work on intermittent setting. The door trim has the usual split on it near the arm-rest. The HRW warning light doesn't work (but the HRW does thankfully).

Looking forward to getting to know it and you lot. I bought it very much with off-roading in mind. Living near Aberystwyth, there's a lot of lovely lanes around.

Looks tidy mate. Another one for team wales :naughty I am sure sideshow bob will be around shortly. We usually go laning once a month or so.

Rear diff oil is a good thing to change, make sure its LSD stuff. Camsport in aber do a good price on millers lsd oil. I think it was about £20 cheaper than the net!
Not sure on prices of comma stuff, usually about £5 a litre.

Heater working on fastest setting is fan resister under the passenger side glove box area. Easier solder the bridge, think yours looks like this as it's a older model t2/mav:

Welcome ! That looks in bloody good nick. Anything with both front fog lamps intact has been looked after I reckon.
Changing the thermostat is a cheap and easy fix and should let your engine get a bit hotter. Flush the system 5 or 6 times with clean water to get all the old stuff out before you put the anti freeze in.

Ah, hi Franz! Certainly nice to know it isn't all Landies in WWL. Definitely up for some laning. Might visit the Pay and Play at Carmarthen as well - not been there yet (though I did take a Landy V8 around Bala this time last year. MPG meant that didn't last long on my fleet!)

Welcome, with reference to your thermostat you will find that the temperature is about 1/3 off the bottom of the gauge, heater doesnt get very hot inside, some of use including myself dont use the standard 82 degree thermostat but have changed it to an 88 degree one, temp gauge about half way, and nice and toastie inside now, also helps keep the veg warm........but thats another thread..... good site to join

Thanks Kwondo. It's behaving like normal then. Certainly wasn't that hot inside, though I think some of the dashboard plumbing might have failed, as there's no output from the RH side vent (face or demist). Toasty ankles though!

Slightly terrified to discover this afternoon that two wheelnuts were missing on the back! I'd taken it in for a pair of new tyres and noticed the missing nuts while I was waiting. Spare is inside because I robbed the nuts from that for the time being. Spare had a bloody nail in it (a rusty nail, so it'd been a while!) so at least I've got a good spare now.

Clutch is biting low, so I'm going to try and bleed it this afternoon. Worked on my Rangie. Any tips? Presume there's another bleed point near the bellhousing somewhere?

Handbrake is appalling, so that needs looking at. Wipers are getting squeaky again too, so might splodge some nice thick grease over the moving bits as the spray stuff clearly wasn't up to the task.

Pleased to report that the front hubs are working as they should. The propshaft rotated a little way before they locked. I then jacked up and turned the wheel backwards to ensure they disengage properly.

Hi welcome as to the sq/wipers mine were like that and it was EXSESIVE wear in the spindlebushes -------- pullthe wiper arms up away from the w/s and hold the arms right at the bottom and wobble the arm LtoR and top to bottom if you get loads of play that is the cause of the noise
you will want a second hand set ofspindle bushes.!!!!!! hope this helps roy:thumb2

That'll be it. Plenty of waggle in the passenger spindle, though not as much as on my 2CV's spindles... (though they have done twice the mileage!).

yer mines a2004 and only done 90000but they ere total shot .
when ifitted the 2ndh ones iput copper slip in all the cups as they were totaly dry Allso watch when removing the nuts ,i droped one down be hind the engine and bulkhead never to be seen again roy:rolleyes:
