hello there didnt even reallse my subs had run out sort it at the weekend ,just need some help terranos been playing up again cut out and wouldnt start lots of smoke out the back running lumpy then died called the AA out sprayed something in air intake and got it going but he reckons it may be the maf sensor ,i know i think i need a new crank sensor as the rev counter is always on and off and mil light but never affects drive,
doe anyone know if i can subsstitute the hitachi maf i have for one of those terrano ones on ebay they look different than the hitachi :doh

Your symptoms are not those of a faulty MAF.

More like air ingress or faulty crank sensor....

If the numbers are the same it will FIT, but that's not a guarantee it will work. Have you tested your maf according to the instructions in the workshop download ?

the crank sensor controls the rev counter does it not ?as the rev counter has been intermittent for a long time last year and every time it fails theres a mil light come on but no reduced performance while on it would cut out at lights dead every few weeks but would start up fine straight away , just the other day it cut then went pear shaped big time but now seems to be running fine apart from the rev counter doing its usual stuff, is that the crank sensor what youre talking about ?

the CKP doesnt control the rev counter. The CKP tells the ECU where the crankshaft is. This signal affects timing, fuel injection etc. If the CKP is going faulty, you will get issues like stalling, hard to start and running issues. The CKP wont make the lights go out, if the CKP is faulty, car goes into limp mode or just uses base settings from the ECU, or worst case, car wont start at all (because ecu doesnt know where the crankshaft is).

thats my poorly educated 2 pence worth.

that seems to make sense as when i experienced all this it sound s the same ,so what does control the rev coun ter if its not the ckp sensor, and where is it do you know

the hitachi maf is very reliable and easily cleaned, I think it was only fitted for a couple of years along with the rexel pump so I dont think it would fit. Perhaps you could get a terrano one from a breakers, I would lend you one to try if you were in my area.

I had a diesel Vectra and that failed to start, RAC sprayed WD 40 into air intake and it started first time and kept running. 2 days later same problem, so I used WD40, then I put car into garage ( Company car).

The issue was that the fuel bled back to the tank, and normal engine starting on the starter motor wasn't possible as it was too slow to pump.

So air is getting in, replacing the fuel is what I think.:thumb2

Probably the ECU uses the signal from the CKP and gives a signal to the rev counter.
After all the ECU knows the revs via the CKP
