Hello all,

I'm thinking of buying a Y61 that i have seen. I have been running Landrovers of various types for the last 10 years, freelanders, defenders and a D3, but after spending a small fortune on seemingly endless repairs I have had enough and have traded for a Seat Leon for commuting.
Anyway getting to the point, I have seen a Y61 that I'm planning to use for greenlaning and overland trips. Can any of you offer any advice of what to look for when buying a Y61, what goes wrong, how easy is it to get replacement parts etc etc.
The car is a short wheelbase 2.8 TD GR on a T plate with a claimed 60k on the clock.
Any advise would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

definitely avoid the early zd 3.0tdi's

the 2.8 is slow by smooth.

think patrols are great but the engines
have been a weak point progressively

nissan should have stuck with toyota
and retained the 4.2 td, big truck needs
big motor.

i had a zd lwb for 2.5 years lovely car
but wish had found a 2.8 instead of
troublesome zd.

great for overland stuff and heavy towing
thanks to 3.5 tonne trailer tow.

So slow and steady then.
How about reliability? From your answer i assume the engine is good, any problems with the drive train and electronics?

Hi welcome to the club, I run a Ford Maverick, (Nissan Terrano in disguise), so I am not well up on the Patrol, but I remember a few posts discussing rust on the chassis, especially the rear end, around the rear springs and also the front cross member.

One guy is rebuilding his Patrol using a "Newer " chassis.

So spend some time underneath the patrol, with a torch and have a great poke around.
Take a big sheet of cardboard with you,( or tarpaulin) much easier to slide underneath. You don't even need to jack these trucks up to do this.

Look for any oil leaks, diesel or brake fluid leaks etc.

Hope this helps,
best regards, Rustic.

Thanks Rustic, I saw that thread about the rebuild. I suppose anything with a steel chassis is going to suffer with all the salt that gets dumped on our roads each year. Gonna have to slap some waxoil about.
