Canon EOS DSLR Lens

Does anyone know what the equivalent Canon 28 to 105MM Film camera Lens is to a DSLR? Something to do with the sensor not being the same size as a 35mm frame.

I thought the focal length of a lens is the same be it digital or film if you are talking about optical zoom.

Digital cameras often have two types of zoom one is based on focal length so its optical the other a zoom effect created digitally rather like that on a PC viewer so its an artificial magnification effect.

If you use a 28mm to 105 mm optical lens it matters not if the film is 35 mm or an old 128 format the zoom capability is the same. Likewise if the sensor is less than 35 mm in size it does not change the zoom ability.

lol, been trying to understand that since I bought my 550d a bit back.

When i went in to look at other lenses the bloke in the shop said "oh that 28 to 135 is the same as a xxx to xxx youd be used to on your old A1, theres a formula to work it out " .................eh :doh

apparently it s the size of the sensor and position of the focal plane that sets the formula. No I dont understand it fully either pls explain to me once you do :thumb2:thumb2

I am told for my EOS550D and many other canons it is factor 1.6 though I did see 1.2 bandied about for another model.

Which one do you have Jim?

quick update........................

just found a couple of pages which both say the EOS1D is 1.3 but the rest are 1.6 :thumb2

I would rather drive through mud than see through it LOL.

Got a 300D body only at a very good price, did someone a favor and got paid in camera. My film camera is a EOS 5 which has been a great work horse, it has a 28 to 105mm EF. So you can see my plan.

yup, and a good one too :thumb2

just take a few shots at extremes of focal length and aperature to make sure its not one of the lenses that vignette :thumb2

Some of the 35mm to d swaps do with canon and it would be a shame if you didnt notice it until after the once in a lifetime shot :(
