I couldn't get on to the site all last night (I was up til about 2am UK time), and this morning up til an hour or so ago. It's not the first time this has happened.

I tried pinging the site but it looks like ti had disappeared completely.

Admittedly I live in Spain but I wouldn't have thought that would make any difference - everything else I accesses in the UK was OK.

Have there been any reported problems ? Just wondering if you had any problems with your service provider ?

It happens to me all the time when trying to get on from my phone or my laptop (I only have mobile broadband at home - no landline). However, it always works from my pc at work (which is connected via a landline). Very annoying.

Intermittent here, sometimes it is ok other times it is down for three or four hours at a stretch. Been onto Bat,been on to ISP,cleared the cache etc. still the same. Started when the site was upgraded last year. Doesn't seem to be any pattern, it can happen at weekends or during the week, morning or night. Very annoying.

It is an Orange (or any of its sister companies) problem.

When we moved server last year somehow their DNS records got messed up, unfortunately they refuse to admit it is their problem :doh

There is nothing I can do this end because nothing here is broke.

See... your memory isn't that bad after all :D:thumb2

For those who are still having problems, below is how to fix :thumb2

For Windows 2000 or XP:-

Using windows explorer (not internet explorer) find the Hosts file which is located in the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc directory.
Right click this file and then left click on properties.
Near the bottom in the Attributes section, make sure the Read-only box is un-ticked. If it is ticked, remove the tick and click OK.
Now double click the Hosts file and open with Notepad. Go to the bottom of the text and add the line:-
65.38.186.188 (then press the Tab key) www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com
Now save and close this file.
If this file was originally read only, follow the steps above to put the tick back in the correct box.
Now reboot your PC and all should work :thumbs

For windows Vista

Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
Click File -> Open
Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc"
Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files (*.*)"
Select "hosts" and click "Open"
Go to the bottom of the text and add the line:-
65.38.186.188 (then press the Tab key) www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com
Now save and close this file.
Now reboot your PC and all will be fine :thumb2

Hmm. Same again last night.

It's a definite problem. Where do you actually host the site ? On a machine at home or on a hosted service e.g. at Orange or some other web hosting provider ? Is the webspace in one place and the domain management someplace else (e.g. I have loads of domains that are registered with one company, but the websites may be with another)

Pretty sure that you are right and that your DNS is screwed someplace from what I can see on some lookups.

Tried looking up the machine & domain & got these :
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Host www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com not found: 2(SERVFAIL)

/usr/bin/host -v -t any www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com.

i can confirm its orange, though not tried to get them to fix it.

oddly can get site up on my smart phone, via orange 3g so
guess its only part of their systems.

lately been so bad on mine ive left machine switched on for
days with site running in a window, and still sometimes its
not there when i come back.
tonight i refreshed the error 3 times til it gave up and loaded!

going to print off those instructions now, like i told myself
before to do....

though best not do it while half asleep

the file just and found had put .185.
not .186. oh well sorted now.

thanks to Bat for instructions, again.

can try adding some forwarders perhaps, but as Bat says, its a DNS issue with the move of the web site. they havent (or someone hasnt)updated thier dns records correctly, they need to fix it, its nothing to do with this website, and probably not the new hosts fault either but if nobody wants to fix it we will continue with these issues. I get the same problem on my smartphone, which is Orange, so it seems to me its an issue with the 3g service which must use different servers perhaps, and its these that will have screwed up dns records. probably.:nenau

It has nothing to do with my ISP. Much more to do with yours :-) Or at least whoever hosts your site and/or manages your DNS records. DNS is universal and shouldn't make a jot of difference where in the world you are. If it's set right it will work. If it isn't.....

Are the website and the domain name held by the same company or different ones ? e.g. I have a load of domains held with a domain registrar and I can then point them off to whatever website I want them to. However, I have a couple where the domain and the website are hosted by the same company. It's obviously much easier to sort if you have control of your DNS records.

From what I have read, I don't think I'm the only one with the problem though.

Yes... big time - to the point I've stopped visiting as often as I'd like.

I'm not with orange either. I don't get the issue with other sites which are fine. Very sporadic. Sometimes if I delete the web address linking directly to the forum and type it in a just nissan4x4ownersclub.com it will allow me to get to the main host page and then get to the forum via the link... though most of the time I can't even get to the main index page either.

I too have run a server from home in the past for my CCTV system so am not a clueless nube in this respect.

I'm with Zen who are probably the best ISP.... IN THE WORLD (because I wanted a number of incoming ports to my address)...

All I know is the sites inaccessible 1/3rd of the time... from prior to joining as when I googled it the first time and tried I just thought it was another dead in the water club with an old link to a server that no longer ran. I'm sure I'm not alone in that observation... it was only persistance and a visit another day that revealed that the site is here still.... occasionally!

In fact... I'm begining to think it a Nissan thing as www.thenissanpath.com where I end up when this site is down also ends up being down at the end of the month - but thats because they have bandwith issues.. ie. need to up their quota.. but they know that and its nothing at all to do with the isses connecting here.

only reason i cant get on now is evenings and nights when often my connection fails
in general.

club and web in general is fine in early hourss and then thru the day, its after uk
tea! time it goes bananas.

think must be general user level, on local servers?

my connection is free, so feel cant complain, but it was isp that decided to make
it free (orange) as had so much mobile contract with them, otherwise still be
paying 315 a month or so.

oddly as stated before my orange 3g doesnt suffer, can get face book easily thanks
to an app, by this site is just too big for comfort on 4" screen. might try using phone
as a dongle.

Yes, and it is a real pita, some days it is fine , other times I can't connect for 1 or 2 days. Luckily, I'm unemployed:(, so can try the site at different times during the day. So far I haven't found a pattern, it can be mornings, afernoons, evenings, late night etc. I can't understand how, if it is Orange's problem, why is it so intermittent? To be honest, much as I enjoy being on here, if it is still like this come renewal time, I won't be renewing. Not to save the tenner because even if it was free, I am not going to put up with it any longer. Perhaps if Bat ran a poll to see just how many members have been or are being affected by this, maybe he could approach Offcom with the info and get them to get Orange to get their act together. Just a thought.

Yes, in the last week or so I have found it impossible to get on at times. It is intermittent and I have tried flushing the cache and other suggestions on here. I have tried to see if there is a pattern or particular time of day but it is definitely random. I have tried it on different computers, different broadband connections , even different counties but it makes no difference at all. I would love if you can get it sorted, Paul.
