Our most loyal friend and life long co-pilot, Holly Dog had to be put down yesterday:o
16 years with the family she was like one of the kids:rolleyes:
Always there in the morning bright eyed and waggy tale. Loved the beach like us all and would always know which boat I was on and be right by the water's edge to greet me back to shore:D
She'd run herself ragged trying to protect me from my power kites and would chase off the cats if they even looked at our food:lol
A couple of tumors took hold a month back and finally got too much yesterday. I had to ask the vet to help her out.:o
Cried like a fool all day:doh
Only a few months ago she was out choosing a Crimbo tree

That's really sad news mate. We lost our two collies over the last couple of years, one 15 and one 16, so I know just what you are going through.

Reading your post brings it all back.

All the best

Alan

i think of my old pal jack every single day , i truely miss him , but this poem helps me .

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Briggie, I loved the bit about the trusting eyes:thumbs That's really what made it so hard to let the vet finish things:o
We're going to recover a bit more before the next pup though :sly
Unless ofcourse something crosses our path

Sorry to hear. I had to have my precious boy Sam put to sleep in 2006, I was devastated.

It does get better, I promise, and one day you will be able to think about Holly and just smile and remember pleasant things.

We had 5 jacks until 18 months ago when two went from old age a few months apart, we now only have the three, eldest is getting on 15 youngest 13, we did try and replace the other two with a young bitch, but doggie hierarchy would not let that happen, as my eldest can show with battle scars, so we will just wait till they go, it is inevitable the signs are there, we know they do not have a lot longer, but as soon as they do depart we will go and get 2 or 3 jack pups, they are part of our lives, Rick

So Sorry Pete, and as for these comments cheers guys got tears in my eyes for all
of you and yours nows!

Its the worst thing about having a dog knowing you'll out live him.

16 years is pretty good though I dont go for all this dog years crap 16 is 16 end of.

5 years we had to let a pup go, well she was about 6 months old, terrible hip issue
sure with insurance could have had ops then learnt to walk again, would have needed
to use a water pool to get her strength back.

Our responsiblility lies in knowing when its time and not to live out our pride in them,
but to remember before the wolves came upto our fires they made their own choices.

Grieve for her, but as said she'll be sending someone else to cross your path soon.

I know how you feel mate we had George our Collie cross put down last Wednesday as he lost the use of his rear legs. Wendy held him whilst the Vet gave him the injection I had to go outside for a blubber he would have been 16 in June.

We went shopping on Saturday and when we got back our eldest Chihuahua Tara could not be found we did a frantic search of the house and garden and Wendy found her under the garden swing chair - died of a heart attack we think. She would have been 13 in June as well.

It makes one realise how we attribute human qualities to a dog when we loose them. On Monday we dismantled Georges kennel and took it to the tip. The end of an era. We plan to scatter Georges Ashes in the woods where he used to love to run after rabbits but never caught one.

Just waiting for my middle daughter to come home from Uni, then no doubt we'll be in a mess all over again.:o
Sorry to here of your double loss , I've herd of dogs suffering terrible loss after one has gone. Poor Tara.

Thanks mate sounds as if Holly & George both had a hold of our respective family's hearts. Our two remaining Chihuahuas Ben (9) & Percy (2) keep looking for Tara at least that's what we put their strange demeanour down to.

The picture here was taken last year hence his grey chin!!

Our old dog is getting on and its already on our minds how our daughter and the younger
dog are going to handle it when its his time.

naturally we want another dog so without wanting to make this sound cold and planned
thinking about getting another dog first. Then the drop from three to two wont be as
severe as two to one?

tbh when we got the old guy back in 99 it was planned as my mum breeds so had one
could let us have at short notice. So when we knew old Jade at 12 or so couldn't
suffer any more we held her whilst the vet did his thing. Came home and cried ourselves
silly til a knock on the door heralded Josh's arrival and turned our lives upside down
again, he was just under a year old then. Some upheaval going from a pensioner to a
junior in hours.
