yep , sally broke down today in a hissy fit .... she decided she wasnt going to go backwards .

she drives forward perfectly and goes through the gears smoothly , but will not go backwards.

atf level is perfect , as is condition of it ..

so , sally is at the garage :(, , ross is going to read the manual and see if there is anything he can do ,he suspects it might be electrical/electronic , but isnt sure .

if it isnt .... its a gearbox out jobbie , and is probably the reverse band .

we will see .

im sure you wish sally well during her " illness " , and lets hope its a speedy and painless recovery

ross is the mechanic at mytholmroyd motor company , hes going to take a look at the a/t section of the manual and see if there is anything he can do , if not .... well ...... decision time i guess

its a w reg showing nearly 200 k but runs like a sewing machine

needs
front drop links
screen very cracked (insurance fix potentially free)
tailgate rusty needs replacing
exhaust blowing

its a nice truck mot'd still and taxed
i recon its worth 800 quid. i'll find some pics

ross isnt a auto gearbox expert , he freely admits that , but he says if it is a actuator/external valve etc , then it may be possible for him to fix/find the problem ... if its a internal problem .... then no

might be worth seeking Rick's opinion on the reverse problem before making any decisions :thumb2

no clive , gearbox has been changed since then ....last time it wouldnt move in any gear  ... but since its been replaced its been fantastic , untill this morning .

rick/swifty are brilliant with all the work they have done on my truck , i have no doubt at all the work they do is top notch .... i suspect this issue is with the new box tho

according to the manual, if it pulls in forward but not reverse, then check the fluid, if OK then remove the sump and check the control valve assembly, this is a very complicated multi part valve block, with lots of balls and springs, so may be a bit too big a job for Ross but you have nothing to loose it could just be a bit of swarff stuck under a ball, but as I said on the phone I would give it 1200 revs cold and whack it from drive to reverse several times to try and clear it first, with your foot in the foot brake of course, Rick

is it something you and swifty could do ? ..... and will it be safe to drive down there ? , i mean if the gearbox needs stripping down in bits and rebuilding ?

it does seem a bit of a coinkidink doesnt it..

anyway, id say if you can, drive it down to Ricks. I cant see any reason why you would need reverse if you stick to the motorways etc? although in saying that..if you have to stop off on the way, you may find youself in a position where you have to reverse?

id ask ross, seen as he has the car, to try what Rick suggested with the gears, perhaps he can clear it?

good point clive , if im honest , im getting fairly sick of it , but i trust rick and swifty to sort out any problems with it , including if it needs a new gearbox , i really love this car , but there comes a point ..... im sure you understand ....but it may be a case of " the devil you know " ( dont tell sally lol ) ....... im absolutely heartbroken and probably not thinking straight , but im considering not paying the mortgage to raise funds for a replacement vehicle , with sally in px ... dunno yetl , like i said im probably not thinking straight .

I remember, long ago, when my father passed his motorcycle test then the only other vehicle he could then drive was a three wheeler, in fact he bought a reliant regal. A condition at the time was that the reverse gear was blanked off, could you believe that. Now some motorbikes have reverse.

So he became very profficient at parking, drive through on car parks etc, don't parallel park, and never get too close to the vehicle in front.
Park on a hill so you can roll back etc.

So you should be able to do a journey without using reverse.

Maybe we all should try it, and see how far we get. :doh
It's more difficult than we think, but with care you should be ok.

2 tonnes is not a weight that one person alone should try to push.

Good luck,
best regards, Rustic

i can drive without reverse down to ricks , problem is a few things , i cannot make it in one go , im going to have to stop a few times ..another problem is what if its a serious problem with the gearbox and i lose forward drive too ? plus it will be getting on for £150 + for fuel for me to get to ricks , something i cannot afford if it doesnt fix it

as for pushing a car , that is not a option regardless of the cars weight

im truely gutted and like i said im probably not thinking straight

I would start with checking the mechanical link between the lever and the gearbox. Its all too easy to assume the worse and that the gearbox has failed internally.

I am pretty sure that our auto boxes are the early type that rely mainly on a fluid mechanics and pressure valve system not like the later gearxoxes that have electric solenoids to change gear.

I would start by checking the movement from car gearshift to where it mechanically moves a lever on the gearbox casing. It only needs a circlip to half break or a rod link to become sloppy for it to simply not engage reverse.

briggie
24-03-2011, 18:23
well , garage changed all fluids etc , and all seemed well , drove it backwards and forwards a few times ..... woo hoo ....... untill i got home :(..... i went to reverse into my disabled bay ..... nice bleep from the reverse beeper ..... no movement :(..... i had to drive forward about 10 feet , then it went into reverse ....... ive had enough of this ...... anyone wanna buy a mistral ? 12 months mot .... or swap for a diesel auto car ?

Pete if you can find me the link to the Mistral auto box as the one I have I am not sure it is the same, then I can look at the linkage and see if it could be the problem, it is odd that you can drive froward and then it will go into reverse, Rick

just to throw a metaphorical spanner into the mix ..... it wont always go into reverse after driving forward , but when it does , it jerks and has loads of power ... ie not slipping

My old man used to hold the output from an engine coil and put his hand on a person next to him and they would jump up and down and he would calmly ask why, I was subject to this many times, when he retired from the RAE Farnborough he was presented with one of the first digital LED watches it would not run on his wrist take it off it ran perfect, a while ago the horse people next to us installed an electric fence but could not tell if it was working, so I grabbed it and without moving said yes it is, the girl said I cannot believe you just did that, I have regularly taken 240 ac I just twitch, good for the system, Rick
