the plastic trims covering my decent looking black steel wheels on caravan
are looking past sell by.

could get decent set of trims for £20 or so.

looking at alloys, ex car variety on the bay.

steels are 5jx13, aware of pcb requirement, any issues with using car wheels

alternative is not covering the black wheels and being safety concious with
these plastic tell tales for wheel nuts coming loose.

alloys of a hobby/tabbert ? or later version of your own?

yeah, looking on cheap side.

challenge when set of trims 20-30 if could get 4 alloys for say 50
then tart up and swap tyres over.

thinking have to check loading after all the 4 steels carry 1700 kg
between 'em, average mk2 escort that also ran on 5j 13s with 155s
somewhat less.

plus would consider having caravan up plated? since ratio still so low
against troll.

up plated? larger wheels? or more weight? as for wheels my tabbert was on 14s hobbys on 13s weird seing as both german and roughly same age!

increase mgw to avoid being overloaded on current plate, hopefully not.

the 13s are a bit weeny, perhaps caravan can have suspension lift like outback caravans!

be quite easy to lift, packer plate between chasis and axle, stiffer shock wouldnt fancy stability if to high lol!

Here's some plastic wheel trims on google. http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=wheel+trims&nomo=1&output=html :nenau

If you fit alloys to wheels with studs, then as the alloys are thicker you may need longer studs on each wheel, as there may not be enough thread engagement.

If they are wheel bolts, then you may need to get longer ones.:nenau

Edit: don't you have to get special nuts for alloys as the surface area is different.. not too sure about this..?

like wheel spacers?

cant really go out on spacers as likemost tin tents the wheel arch covers
come down slightly around wheels,

maybe some nice shiney trims, with led valve covers lol

good link, thanks,

sems fair choice of spoked designs, to match troll.

not six spokes but alteast the five spoke designs would
compliment, plus lots of fresh air between spokes
to allow wheel clamp and chance to feel if brakes
are getting warm.

and with the 'fives' tie in with mock wheel nuts.

if you see a sixer though let me know seems to jump to
7 then 10:(

i would be careful with car alloys, try finding some 'van' alloys as you have to think of the sideways force on the rims when turning a twin axle trailer! Some small vans have pretty high payloads for example a berlingo/partner 800 carries 800 kilos plus the weight of the van and runs on 6 ply tyres. Therefore - it's fair to assume wheels from one of these would carry the weight and be strong enough to resist cornering forces.

I might be completely wrong, if so feel free to tell me but be careful if one breaks it could do a lot of damage and would the insurance company be happy :nenau

well dont think will be going alloy for now though found some
6 spoke trims on ebay just after posting before so having
a closer look for a match to troll wheel design. no big rush
can always just run with bare rims as nice and clean.

With wheel trims, you need to make sure the edge of the trim does NOT go past the edge of the wheelrim. You must have it slightly shy of the rim edge.

The reason for this is to stop the trim cutting the tyre wall during cornering/bouncing as you travel - especially tight turns! Here the tyre wall is forced outwards, and a plastic trim edge can cut into the tyre wall and cause a blowout later on.

Alloys wheels are available for caravans, most caravan shops sell them from £60 each - this may be a better option, as at least you know they are the real thing.

Caravan Breakers are also an option - there are plenty of stolen recovered, or matchstick martyrs around that wheel can to taken from.

good point :thumb2 not something id ever thought of

If you stand and watch a large twin axle caravan being manoeuvred around tight bends you will be surprised how much sideways pressure is put on the tyres! Hence me saying be careful with car alloys as they may not take the strain :thumb2

good train of thought guys. yes and on caravans traditionally the
tyre has been the first level of suspension so full(ish) profile tyres
make more sense than car derived fashion low profiles.

may go back to first alternative plan bin trims as rims are shiny
black and give some of these wheel nut movement indicators,
which for what like form make up in function.

could make outfit match by getting troll's alloys blackened, well filthy
anyway....

That sonds like the best option to put new trims on 4 safty sake, pluss isurance complications if if needing to claim
Better the devil you no "ahh"

IF you do go to a breakers you don't need a full set of matching trims.. just 2 of each if thats all they have that look the part.

If anyone can see all four wheels at the same time then things have gone real pear shaped.
