Don't know if anybody else has one, but there is a solar storm over dumfrise and Galloway where we live. it's all ready taken out half our towns power. Street lights have all blown, the radio in my mums Honda jazz has fried itself think the ecu has to because it idles at 3500 rpm:eek: and our computer, phones and things have burnt out:eek: went outside and there's no wind, rain or anything common. Think it's electromagnetic radiation:confused:
AH its the end of the world!
There was possibilities last week thursday/friday.

an unexpected solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field during the late hours of Feb. 21st. The impact did not spark a strong geomagnetic storm, but auroras appeared around the Arctic Circle anyway
you need two phones to have a conversation, who you gonna phone?

Whoever else has a HF radio. ;)
Does not need any infrastructure.

Glad I do not live in Scotland, only wants a big one of those to hit centrally and all this computer stuff we have all come to accept as part of our daily lives will be fried, no bank accounts no store transactions, just total chaos, not a nice thought, Rick

i bet the powers that be have it covered!..
hang one... this is the land of " it will never be me"
we are all doomed!:lol
would storms emp not fry radio, batterys etc or being miltery is it shielded? phone boxes are suposed to work no matter what civil defence an all that........<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/0V3SqxUomwk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I don't know the specifics about it but. Its alot less likely to harm a simple radio.
Just think of what electronics are connected from your pc to mine to make the link. Aswell as electricity network etc.
we are due south of you in Cumbria, I will let you know if it reaches us. Oh......... if it blows up the computer I wont be able to tell you!!! good bye everyone, regards bri
Had a quick read up on it, seems its could cause electric currents to surge along power lines etc.

You are only safe with an old valve jobbie, transistors and there derivatives will fry even if shielded, Briggie is the best guy to answer this in specific terms, Rick
so the military are buggered then too?
It will be alot less likely to damage a HF radio, especially when not plugged into anything.

so where did this post come from? Rick
i read somewhere phone boxes will work in event of a crisis, mobile networks will jam with gossip etc of course there are now dedicated mobile links for emergency services that may have superced this phone box theoery remember dolphin it went to allow police to move to digital semi secure handsets!

The police radio net is encrypted and separate from other traffic, has to be :thumb2
Theres no dedicated mobile networks or links for emergency services but the normal network can be closed down in various stages and only enabled users allowed to access :D they nearly got as far as using it in London during the 7/7 bombings. Dont think they did though.
Tbh when the end of the world comes it be down to the Flanders carrier pigeon to see us through.

funny about domestic mobile demand, cos when orange went live they reckoned
they had enough capacity to cover every person in china, ok not a great deal of
use in england, steady now, so how come still get network busy at new year
if their systems so capable.

Interesting, transistor derived technology but did not fail, was it powered up at the time of the sun spot? although according to info I have accumulated on the subject over the years even un-powered devices will fail, but who knows, Rick

They reckon in a major incident most cities would lose most of their standard mobile coverage in a very short time (cant recall exact figures at this time of night :D ) Thats why only the very unwise have reliance on mobiles in their emergency and business continuity plans, have a bag of change and a little black book.
Theres loads of anecdotal evidence and accounts after Manchester and London to name just 2 where phone boxes kept going strong, plus BT bring in their emergency kit :thumb2
If anyone gets the chance to via local retail or other organizations, go to an Operation Argus presentation. The local counter terrorism bods do it. Very good :thumb2

Few years back where i lived there was a massive power surge. Loads of people reported their computers blowing up but in the cold light of day it seemed it was the first stop into the appliance that had blown, switched on or not, ie modems or cable boxes :thumb2

just argus it eh?
funny how many folks only have mobiles, or at home have wireless phones
and no wired phone for back up.
we keep an oldish wired bt phone next to the modem.
similar vain how many have payg phones only and always (nearly) out of
credit. sloppy behaviour when have youngsters at home.

Who needs a solar storm.....the biggest telecoms company in China (Huawei) is offering to install a £50m mobile network across the entire London Underground for the Olympics bid so that you can make calls from anywhere on the Tube. :thumb2
They are offering to do it for free.
Now I can't imagine why they'd want to do that....?:nenau

They also launched the project around the same time as Richard E grant was doing the Argoosy ads, its a national exercise led and developed by the secret organisation based in London who previously didnt exist but now actually have a web site advertising how to apply to be a spy ......... only in this country eh :doh:doh:doh

In fact if you think you may be suitable, heres the on line self assessment ;)
http://www.cubiksonline.com/SecurityService/Assessment/Instructions.aspx
I've at last got round to going WiFi on the main computer, using a USB RFI dongle, so the telephone wire is no longer directly connected to the computer via the Hub.
Last Summer we had a close lightning strike, luckily I had pulled all cables out of the computer.
When I tried it all, two phones had blown up, also the Hub, in fact I got a shock from the Hub, as the power supply had shorted out.
If the computer had been connected, the computer would have been wrecked, also the screen, keyboard, printer, scanner etc.

not sure if that works well in the UK. the phone line is 50v DC when not in use, with a current of around 5mA I think, but that rises to about 25mA when a call is being made. I can't remember the current when its ringing, but its 75V and it fricking stings I can tell you that :(

shhhhh ;)
the trouble with a solar storm , is it generates a magnetic field of varying intensity ( geomagnetism ) , not only can that effect radio signals , it can also by its very nature effect electrical/electronic equipment to varying intensities also , another problem is when the magnetic field collapses .... but its starting to get a bit heavy now , and ive got some studying to do for my exam :o
or if you really want to be bored crapless ......
