View Full Version : what must be joking!. (Miles per gallon)
I went to bridlington other day there and back cost me
£50, worst than me with lager but anyway i cont it out
and then i put a £5 in it then put some in my can
set the clock to zero then cont it again, cant beleve it
its only doing 22mls to a gallon on a long run and local.
Anyway i put £20 in it now the needle just hit the 1/4 mark
but soon as iv done 5/6 mls it drops 1/2 Way between
1/4 to red is this too heavy on juce, i can understand
been a heavy motor and been a 4/4, but a frend of mine
got a astro van weighs nealy 3tons 4.4 petrol and gets
28 some times 30, mine is terrano t2 2.4 pet,
any answers out there, CHEERS... :( :? :!: -banghead-
Hi,
Is your mileage recorder accurate? Wheels standard size? ect, ect.
I also have a petrol 2.4 and i am doing much better than you as i did state a while ago in the forums.
Just did a bit of work on this,
Rotherham to Bridlington on a route planner came back at 74.5 miles. (I don’t know which way you went and that is the shortest)
£50 changed at 1.08 per litre = 46 l litres.
74.5 miles divided 46 litres =
(7.36 MPG) (2.61 Km per litre)
I could of course made a mistake and i hope i have for your sake as that is returning 14.73 mpg.
can someone just run over my figures
Mav.
ive got the 2.7 tdi and its probably about the same. depends if your foots flat to the floor all the time... mine normally is!!!
I've got heavy shoes too! Need em to get up the hills!
Not sure if these are the right ideas but i'll throw them in the pot anyway.
EGR valve? do they have em won't this cause high mpg?
Autohubs? again does it have em will they cause high mpg?
Aircon? Does it have it, do you have it on?
Brakes? does it have em? (only joking i know the answer to that) Are and binding?
Just some of my ideas Ryan
Gearbox oil? reduce friction reduce power needed.
Roof rack, roof lights, roof boxes. Some more sprung to mind.

Drive it carefully and if the vehicle is running correctly I get around high 20's or even 30 MPG. The AC never seems to make any difference on mine so it stays on. On a run I get a little over 30, once had 36MPG 8O . I once towed van up to Whitby (90 miles) and then ran around for a few days up there and got 29MPG. At these figures I have allways been quite pleased with it. However if I give it some stick then around 25 or a bit lower.
I have a Scenic 1.5 diesel and she'll do mid 40's around town and around 70mpg on a run, wish the T2 would do that

Just done a run of 160 mile or so and achieved around 32 mpg, I'm happy enough with that, it will be a different story towing the caravan though :(

I get 23mpg on a run never seems to change even when i fitted a new turbo. Manual box, no racing. if i drive around town i get 21mpg.
on runs I get 30mph, around town about 28/26 when towing caravan 24/25
but.........Hellhawk do you get your fuel from ASDA? A couple months ago I had been ustng ASDA fuel and I mentioned to my mechanic friend that the terrano needed a service as the last check had come out at 22mpg, where you getting your fuel from?, ASDA I said its 2pence cheaper there and I live nearby......... try the garage at oxenholme he told me , so I have ....and Im back to 30mpg. this test was only over two tank fulls and I tried it with an open mind....but I will try it again with ASDA just to proove it to myself. perhaps Hellhawk if you are using supermarket fuel you could give it a try and let us know.....bri

I'm sure there is no difference in the quality of fuel from Asda or any other supermarkets to Shell and the like!
Don't the fuel tankers all come from the same refineries??
I'm getting 24mpg on short trips and 29mpg on longer trips and we have just hit the £112.9 a ltr here one garage in the next town is £114.9 a ltr..

Yes Bri i will try different fuel thanks for the mention.
On this note i have just recieved a new K&N 57i kit and also all the additives from Crewchief (Thanks Richard for a prompt service) I intend to replace ALL the oil and add the Molyslip to try to improve my mpg. On the 20th of this month i will be driving to the Dordogne for two weeks the drive from Kendal and back is 1600 miles plus driving around france.
I will setup a new thread in Mechanical forum if anyone is interested to list any and all mpg and quality/feel changes to the car, and also total cost for the oils, filter etc. I may even try miller diesel octane boost as i will have may tanks full of fuel to use.
I will take some pictures of the diffs and gearbox/tranfer box if i get any interest.
There is a difference in pertol from station to station, my brother in law only uses shell in his bike, he says the difference is vast. So i must assume diesel quality will vary as well.
But i have never got more than 23mpg on a run and i fill up at motorway service stations sometimes as well.
So if anyone has any suggestions on how to get more mpg please let me know

just filled up at texaco and it had done 17.98 mpg for the last 205 miles.
this was short trips around town.
Maybe i had better ring dieselbob.
I forgot to mention that I put in a bottle of injector cleaner during my test, so that could have had some effect on the fuel used . I have read in various places that the best fuel consumption coincides with highest torque, 2000-2500 in T2, and that wind resistance builds up dramatically over 58mph, so at 60mph about 2400rpm would seem to be the best max speed for our vehicles, this is also the max speed when towing, so Im happy with that.
I hope that you enjoy your trip to france, we usually have a 12 week trip around europe each spring with our aged caravan and we love it, usually doing about 4500 mies round trip..........bri
