The cartridges that come with a new printer are only partly filled, I always buy a printer that will accept being re-filled, but this is sometimes difficult to find out without trawling the net.

I wish I had done this..:doh
I bought a "cheap" Lexmark X5495, printer, scanner, fax machine, but the ink cartridges are very expensive, and other 3rd party ones don't work, as the printer checks the serial number of the cartridge, and stores it, so you can't refill it or use it say after 5 or more legitimate cartridges.

There are several threads on the internet that discuss this, which those from America, suggest "Taking it into the yard and discharging a weapon on it"

The ink on new printers is a part filled cartridge, so I bought the larger capacity cartridge and now re-fill that, even though the printer keeps telling me to replace it, so I can get round it. 2 extra key presses to accept the screen message.

Worth thinking about when buying cheap printers, they are cheap because they want to sell 20ml of ink at an extorsionate price. :nenau

I use epson printers for work and so does my daughter in uni, graphic design. They're ink is silly money so we buy generic cartridges from 7dayshop.com
Bargain prices and no vat as they're based in Jersey. They split large orders to stay under their £20 vat threshold or summut :thumbs

I do a lot of black and white printing and no colour stuff, so shifted to laser printers a long time ago, i'm not paying inkjet cartridge prices!

as you say the ink costs more than the printer!
