I was over there a few weeks ago, loads of those setups knocking about. You can hire them.
I was in a campervan which was a bit less adventurous, but fantastic trip all the same.
Saw one 4x4 that had a military looking trailer tent. Had a special frame that swung the boat up and top of the trailer.
i noticed they had no problems of MTB'ers or ramblers tellin em to get off their tracks lol

We have 3 caravans and wouldn't be without one, i can't see any real pitfalls. I must admit it's better if you've got somehwere to keep it thogh and don't have to fork out for storage.

my old Buccaneer is doing pretty well, 32 years old :augie
but you wouldn't want to tow it across the outback, it would play havoc with the cut glass and china :lol
and at 2.6 tons it would give the toyotas clutch dome stich over those bumps :thumb2

before donating to the above , i suggest you google the name and make your own mind up .... most of you know i lost my father and my uncle mike in service of our country , the royal british legion do a sterling job , many organisations cater for the needs of ex servicemen , im involved with the legion , but heres another one.

Lets not start competing organisations here :thumb2
The legion, HfH, SSAFA and newer groups like snowdrops all work together for a common aim.
Snowdrops actually hit on one of my pet hates. That is how the forces often bin you once theyre finished with you. I wont bore you with examples but Ive seen several awful examples.
Good luck with the scheme snowdrop :thumb2

Oh, I would SO love to do that trip. I have a caravan, and go touring regularly, but only in this country so far.
I am saving up for when I retire, then I'm going to take the 'trol (which will be properly restored by then and a caravan, and whichever dog or dogs I have at the time, and go to Europe, and drive. And drive, and drive. I'd like to see Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, Sweden, Norway (not in that order)... India.

Now that is a good plan :thumb2
We intend being caravan dwellers for a significant part of the year when we retire (not just fair weather). One of those Aus vans would be the muts bits for us.

wonder if give my abbey spectrum a lift to match the troll.
mind some of those americian trailers (caravans) have more
ground clearance even in standard road going spec.
think that oz unit could do with a pto to power trailer's axles
in roughest stuff. believe landrover and military toyed with
such as set up with mixed results.

Just out of interest, with the price of fuel going up like it is how many people are put off towing the tin hut on wheels?
I used to have a van and would love another one but now that diesel is going up like it is I'm not so sure about them anymore. How long before just a simple day trip to the seaside will be out of the question too.

a very good point jim, to tow a decent sized famil caravan you need a capable car and that usualy means big fuel bills. Or do we flyof abroad and let the plane do all the damage to the atmposphere? It seems fuel prices are just shifting the problem and not fixing it.

Hi Jim, the way we look at it is that the costs have gone up but then so have the costs of all other holidays.
when i started out caravaning (1984 ) it was a cheap holiday, it isnt now but its still good value :thumb2
plus of course you get to drive long in front of Pete :augie

agreed ;) and we posted at exactly the same time!!
One way I look at the big car argument is that if I didnt have the Jeep Id have somthing a bit sporty, Focus ST or similar. They use similar amounts of fuel and cost at least as much to run :naughty

I think it's going to have most effect on those already on a tight budget! I must admit the cost of comeerical sotes over the last few years has soared! I don't use sites anymore. I'm not paying £20 plus per night to rent a few square yards of grass it's a flipping rip off.

This is where Debs and I fall out, she likes the well specified sites, I'd stop in the middle of an empty field...............
Guess where we end up most of the time

Well we aint had a holiday for several years now so it really wont change much for us other than make us think twice about the odd day out. Have to say though I'm seriously wondering if we can afford to sell the T2 and get something smaller. One of the reasons we kept the T2 was in the hope we'd get another van, well that isn't going to happen.
Jim
thats why i have a trailer tent dont notice the fuel usage with that behind just drives as normall returns the same fuel consumption as normal, just have a bit more fuss putting it up lol

must be honest my missus runs one of these ecomotive thingys
http://listers.co.uk/img/v/c/new/full/46326/New-SEAT-Leon-Diesel-Hatchback-1.6-TDI-CR-Ecomotive-SE-5dr.jpg
Its cool as hell with decent trim, climate, blacked out windows, looks more sporty than it is!!! can still manage the ton easily. Comfy for me at over 6ft
BUT gets incredible fuel economy and zero road tax :nenau
I have been tempted but we'd have to let the caravan go :naughty

trading trucks for cars, what after theyve just got you thru all that snow??
shame on you!
we get about same mpg towing as solo any way, though this year might not
go as far as last year, might see if can keep with in yorkshire after all plenty
to go at...
tbh i dont think about fuel cost too much. just keep filling it up.
5 years ago we were in west high lands of scotland, not sure if fuel protests
on then too but on skye and in sticks was 135p a litre, was great to get
back to yorkshire and see it around 125p, so now its 129.9p at local garage
not that bad considering nearly 6 years later?

we avoid big commercial and noisey club sites, club rallies and cl's
many with electric can be had for £5-10 a night still.

Its highly unlikely to happen. Its just we didnt use the caravan very much at all this year due to personal circumstances.
Thats going to change this year and i dont think a leon ecomotive would make it to the end of the road with or lump on the back :thumb2
if we dont use the van I cant really justify running a grand cherokee however much I like it.
Im having an economy drive at the mo . less harsh acceleration, beter anticipation etc etc and managing at least 32mpg average per tank full...............the jeep survives :D:D:D:D

I emailed to Nick Clegg about road pricing. (Bearing in mind that this is all dressed up as "green" measures - which is rubbish of course, it's all about tax tax tax).
He replied that the idea is that we all go by train.
I asked him how I would tow my caravan behind a train. No reply.
I emailed again and said that instead of taking caravan holidays in the UK maybe I should sell the car and fly abroad on holidays? If the environment is the government's main consideration why are flights so cheap? Errr, no reply...
I'll still be caravanning, how else would I be able to take my dog and all my toys on holiday with me? :)

I think the aim is to get the uk's co2 emissions down, and if you fly most of the co2 ends up on another country's quota. Though we only have one atmosphere :nenau confused? you will be :lol
