It is believed that the energy needed to PRODUCE a new car FAR outweighs the energy its more efficient ,newer, engine saves in fuel against that of an older car in its first couple of years life.
I note that the Chelsea tractor in the article is a shiny new BMW. How much energy (carbon footprint in clever jargon) do you suppose was needed to produce such a vehicle? Far more than any manufacturer would care to calculate and fully disclose I bet.
Many of us have vehicles which are long in the tooth but still going strong .My Terrano is ten years old , so I have saved five times as much PRODUCTION energy as a person who buys a new car every two years.
It must still be efficient or it wouln't pass its MOT exhaust test.
So, where is my medal for being so environmentaly friendly?

If you follow the above (without falling asleep) to its logical conclusion, Ken Livingstone should pay me to drive my T2 through London. 8)

Not long before this kind of thing gets rolled out all over the big citys and even the wanabe smaller citys will see the cash cow and milk it.
All the other councils will leave Ken to take the initial flack see what happens, if the flack dies down as has happened with the congestion charge they'll all want a piece of it. Free inner city driving will be a thing of the past

and what about people running a 10 year old on wvo surely thats more enviromental than all these new low emissions jobbies their trying to promote.

the new navs with all emisions gear returning worse mpg than the old ones, new cars will be cleaner than ten yr old motor but its buger all to do with enviroment its revenue!

From the article we 2.7 TDs made before March 2001 won't be affected ...

see below..

What about other cars?
The majority of cars, in bands C, D, E and those in F with emissions up to 225g/km, as well as those registered before March 2001 with engines up to and including 3,000cc, will continue to pay the same daily charge of £8.

Olders of blue or orangs badges pay£10 one off payment irrespective of car size ,think £10 staying in my pocket.

After doing this in Manchester.

There are a few coach firms in my neck of the woods who will not take on jobs to London because it can work out so expensive. If you stop a coach on a red line (along gutter) to drop off or pick up passengers, it's a £100:00 fine , and that's before £10:00 per half-hour parking charges on meters, congestion charges and any other legalised highway robbery ....
Someone ought to inform "Red Ken" that they HUNG people like him in the past !!!

We were going to be staying in a hotel in Kensington,£8 congestion charge, and £30 per day for parking(staying for 3 days!) !! :o

Hi Cosmic, It might be worth getting the price of a flight down m8 as it's often not much more than a train ticket & alot quicker ie about 1 hour 10 mins  If you could'nt get a flight from your end I know you can from mine so you could leave the truck at mine if you wanted

When we went down a few years ago parking on some meters was free on Saturday afternoons and on Sundays, not so sure now ? 8O

Also isn't congestion charge free on Sundays ?
We were down in the Mav last August went through centre on a Sunday no charge..

Certainly I prefer the train, if there are only one or two people.
I wonder when Birmingham will face the same charging system...? 8O

Really annoys me as people just take in all that is printed or voiced in media about 4x4 drivers and gas guzzler rubbish. Why don't they mention all other cars with 2.4 engines and above why victimise 4x4 owners seems like everyone always wants a scapegoat to pick on.
