View Full Version : Hello from a new Terrano II owner
Hello All,
Just joined these forums and brought my first 4x4 3 days ago.
I have purchased an R reg Nissan Terrano II 2.7 TDi SE in green. The vehicle has done 103,000 miles and only had 3 owners of which two were women. Perfect condition inside and out other than a few war wounds (scuffs on the bumpers etc which you would expect for its age).
Engine sounds nice and so far is a dream to drive.
One down side though already, I have had to replace the battery on it and the couplings that go onto the battery - they were completely shot and my first day it would not start :(.
But after replacing the battery with a nice blue one costing £92 its working like a treat :thumbs
Anything else I should check on it that may be likely to be at fault?
Hopefully will have a long and enjoyable use out of my first 4x4.

battery terminals coupling are common. done both of mine now. one last week.
download section give you a few things to check and how to do it,.
make sure you can get 4WD. and change diff oils. as some times get missed in services.

Do you know when it was last serviced?
Oil, fuel and air filter are simple DIY things, lots of info on here for how to change... also with the bad weather due to make its return I'd double check your coolant levels, 4WD is working correctly and if time your diff oils.
I would also check your jack is in the boot... no reason for it not to be, but one of them things you dont think about till you need it!!! :lol

Whats the best way to test the 4x4? (might be a daft question)
When I put the gear into 4H and 4L the 4 wheel notification light comes on if thats what you mean?

then drive turn to full lock. SHOULD get all tight and youll here the wheels skip..
ALL NORMAL. and 4WD is working fine..
also read the back of the sun visor..

Change the oil in your rear axle....you have an LSD and it MUST have the correct LSD oil in it, but its typically left during servicing. Knackered oil causes the odd funny noise and LSD misbehaviour, especially in reverse.
Also get under the front and check if the front anti-rollbar droplinks are in place. There is a balljoint either side and also a set of rubbers either side of where the droplink bolts into the lower suspension wishbone....if these are knackered/gone/popped out the handling will be very rolypoly. Links/rubbers are about £15 a side from Milners Offroad and simple to fit.....you might just need a small hand grinder to get the droplinks out of the ARB.
And when you do filters don't skimp. Better to pay a few quid extra and get the right thing; too many stories on here of folks who've skimped and learned their lesson! Opie Oils do good deals on oil and filters; we have a club link on here and I've also used them happily on z4forum.com
Finally, if you are buying an air filter anyway, consider a K&N induction kit (the 57i version). Costs under £60 and will deliver a little bit of extra oomph (nothing miraculous, dpon't get turbo-excited!) but more importantly 2-3mpg extra as any of us who have fitted one will confirm.:thumb2 So pays for itself in a few tanks of diesel.
