View Full Version : mud terrain or all terrain for snow???
hi all
i have a standard 2003 swb terrano with standard 16" wheels fitted with 235/70/16 tyres
im buying some tyres for the snow, should i buy mud terrain or all terrain for the snow?
also can i fit bigger tyres ie. 255/65/16. i dont want to put the speedo out so what size will be ok? or shall i just put the original 235/70/16 back on?
oh and merry christmas everyone :)

Depends where your'e going and what the conditions will be like. Most mud tyres I've seen are 80% off-road 20% on-road. Good grip if it's slippery but won't grip so well or last as long on the road. See the tyres thread for more opinions.
bit of a difference in opinion here also depends what you will use it for after the snow as well
a decent set of a/t's should be fine like grabbers or coopers

Again depends on what sort of snow?:augie
Last weekend up in the er woods:sly it was all virgin snow where we were off piste:D In those conditions open tread muds were way better than the other guys on at's.
Once your on the mush on the road though things get very different, you need a good water shifting tyre, on the ice they're all krap unless you've got studs in them:naughty
what about the tyre sizes anyone :nenau
depends how much modding you want to do
31's if modded 30's without

Tyres are going on a patrol?
Do a search as tyres on patrols I dont know.
It's been discussed recently though;)
If it is the T2 then 31s will go on if you trim the plastics and take the mud flaps off.
as i said the car is tottaly standard, i aint doin any mods and want to keep the speedo correct.

2003 t2
the speedo is out by 5mph normally so might not make much difference in the end
is that 5mph faster or slower than the speedo reading?
If you don't want any speedo reading changes I'd stick with the same size you have now. If your buying just for the snow I'd just get AT's.

On the T2 the speedo over reads by 5mph ish. So if you go up in tyre size to 31s it's nearly spot on:D

1st choice : alpine tyres
2nd choice : General Grabber AT2's
3rd choice : your feet :)
Having MT's on my T2 and AT2's on my Patrol... AT's win hands down. MT's (I have Kumlos KL71's) are crap on snow and even worse on ice
I run general grabbers at 2 's 31x 10.5 x 15 and they have been great, in the snow and all round use

noise is not a problem. the complete lack of grip is
taking the T2 out this weekend for some snowy laning, will report back

The noise thing is complete ballox, they're mucho quiet for a mud tyre :thumbs
Grip wise I've found them better than my Insa special tracks I had before, and seem to keep me up with the BFG mud shod landies with no bother,so there:p
There were some earlier models of the KLs that didnt wear very well and I think these are often confused in "my mate" tales.
The KL71s weak point that I can see is only when it's proper wet boggy claggy mud, they dont seem to self clean then:doh but then I wonder what else would:augie
well i have bridgestone duellers h/t tyres on ..... they coped very well with the recent snow /ice , and are very quiet on the roads :D

kingpin mud trackers.:sly
i agree with above im running BFG A/T's on my patrol and found them to be an excellent alrounder
i had a lad round mine last night when he came to pick other tyres up, he has had them and said they were quite bad in the wet to the point of loosing it round corners in a permanent 4wd landy, he said he would never buy them again, also mentioned a few others experience with them were very similar
personally i dont know, the tracker ii tyre tho was the same in the wet, havnt found the bfg muds that bad copaired to the others in the wet but are defo noisier than at's
not a chance
complete sh1t on my T2
Correct inflation, right direction :nenau
There far from $hit my friend.!

I got my new AT Insa Turbo Rangers fitted today. Obviously not done much driving on them yet but first impressions are good :thumb2 on a mixture of cleared roads, snow, slush & serious ice.

A point most have missed so far...
Its not the treads in the centre of the tyre that pull you through snow, its whats around the sides!
A good set of A/T's such as BFG or their Kingpin copy (which i'm running a new set of on the G.C) have big side treads so when the centre treads fill with snow the sides keep you going!
Another bonus of A/Ts over muds is in wet or slushy snow theres more rubber cutting through to the tarmac, giving more grip.
On the other hand I used to love driving un-driven snow covered roads with my sammy. I had Insa Turbo Sahara / Yokohama Geolander tread (they were actually greenway machos) and found that they were unreal for climbing the lightweight suzuki through 2 feet + snow. No way an A/T would have allowed that!
I believe the general belief around most off-road clubs is that aggressive A/Ts make the best all rounder for snow / icy conditions, but if you go extreme you are bound to need extreme tyres :thumb2
These are what i'm running, and I gotta say they are a bargain for the price!

Also a note from the trade...
In the next few weeks most tyre manufacturers are having a price increase to reflect the international tyre shortage (Kingpin are expected to price themselves out of the market)
Then after Christmas everything is going up 2.5% due to the VAT rise...
So in less than one month tyres are going to bump up in price! Anyone interested in new rubber I recommend getting sorted quick to take advantage of the current lower prices.
If anyone needs help i'm more than happy to assist.
General Grabber AT2s work very well for me in the snow.
end of the day every tyre has it's pros and cons.

is that 5mph faster or slower than the speedo reading?
They tend to be out around 10% (under-reading that is!) on average but best checked against a satnav. Its variable and I have had cars, like a Honda HRV VTEC, that was spot-on....the old beemer isn't far out either, always best to check your vehicle yourself.
It means all these T2 owners that think they are getting 26mpg are closer to 23mpg in the real world.....:(

My G.C is terrible! I think its designed for much bigger wheels than what is supplied standard...
When goiung through one of those speed checkers my speedo reads about 33/34mph but the speed sign states around 28mph!
Wondered why folk were flying past me when my speedo is reading 70

My T2 is the opposite,
the speedo shows i am going 4 miles an hour slower than i actually am, according to my sat nav anyway. Till reading this i thought it was my sat nav that was wrong as i am running the standard tyre size.

Dont go by those checkers especially with only that difference, most are way out :thumb2 one by us (I guess it must be battery os solar powered) has real wobblers but is ususally conked out the next tie you go past. I was apparently doing 50 odd in a 30 following a tractor not so log back :nenau

always been a fan of at2 as a 50/50
but now looking at cooper st, called 60/40 off/road
and bigger brother stt the mudder.
the st is called at to mt so bit more mud than an at
but not full blown mt of the stt!
also good range of sizes, indeed about only new mud
found in my 265/70 16 troll fitment.

Daved - unfortunately not, only 15" & 16".
Not many cheap options available in 17", best value at the moment for me seems to be the KL71s
I have 265/70 R17 General Grabber AT2 on my Patrol. They are available in a number of 17ins sizes, IIRC.
I did consider the Kumho KL71s when I bought the AT2s - but they weren't readily available at the time. It also bothered me that they were directional, so there's only a 50-50 chance that the spare will be any use other than as a "get-you-home". Also, I reckon the AT2 will be better than the KL71 on snow and on dry/wet tarmac and on most unsealed lanes. Obviously, the KL71 will be better on deep, gloopy mud - but from memory, the only time I've seen any of that recently was on Gorbeck Road for a half mile or so - and the AT2s did OK even there.
