Actually I think you are right, the second picture is showing the lorry further down the hill than the first, look at the tracks in the snow in the foreground.

In fact no proof that anything was being towed, you could have done the same picture with a 2CV :lol:lol

Now if it was a Mav or Terrano, the picture would be blurred due to the speed :thumb2

They were the only colours that would complement the colour of rust.:nenau

I worked for a company that had 2 brand new Austin Maxis, the rubber bumper mounts were perished and there were bubbles on the front wings,on the day of delivery.... They had been stored in a wet field for 2-3 years before being sold.:doh

Now... I love Allegros. My girlfriend at the time had an orange one (black vinyl roof) that we inherited from her Dad. It took us everywhere - touring trips to the Highlands, Lakes & back every weekend... Could fix it with a hammer. It looked immaculate to the end - but rust took its toll on tie bar mountings etc. & it wasn't viable to keep on the road. Fond memories...
& the Vanden Plas models? With Walnut trim, folding tables & a grille like a Bentley (sort of)?.........

Memories................ :lol

I had an Austin Ambassador, kept it 13+ years, body work excellent, had it from new, stripped it down, waxoyled everything...........

ALL the problems were mechanical, and most were down to poor quality control.

Nothing tightened up properly, clutch and oil pump fell apart due to loose bolts, clutch slave cylinder full of casting sand. Alternator failed, on inspection, a loose fixing bolt was shorting out the field winding, removed it varnished the coil.... fixed. Rear gear selector seal leaks, easy to replace though.

I carried ball joints and wheel bearings as they used to buzz zzzzzzzzz as you went along, what that was was the small coiled wire spring that went around the outer seal, used to come off and drop into the bearing..
Solution, remove the spring, job done.

Having the same oil in the engine and gearbox :doh:doh

So how did I learn all my car mechanic skills........................Buy BL / BMC /Austin /Morris /Wolsley /Riley / they were all the same..

To learn body work skills you just bought a 70's Jap car, less than 3 years old, plenty of practice on front wings.:thumb2

Just remind me why I use waxoyl...............:bow

lter when had escort as my first motor, allegro was on potential
list, this was '86 btw.

recall could get an estate version with the 1725 motor, reckon

My first x girlfriend bought an Allegro! - After we split!!

I had the 4 pot calipers off a princess on my capri!

My second girlfriend, now wife of 16 years, Her farther had a maxi and the next size up from that???

My Morris Minor had the 1300CC engine from a marina...

Some of the parts were useful but the cars were Sh!te!!!!

Saying that in the early years we did have a Beige Maestro 1.3L and a blue 1.6L and neither missed a beat!!

arh the maxi family, would land crabs count as predecessors, dad brought an
austin 1800 home suprisingly one day when i was about 10, late 70s, bit of
a change from the rwd vauxhall 101 and victors had til then, didnt last long
think traded for a wolsey 2200, first car we had with a radio automatic. straight 6
too was diferent from the regualr 4 pots of past. got it hoem then it sat in garage
thru 2 months of dep snow early 78, whilst warranty ticked away!. it ate drive
shafts, never got to tow with it, shame thought the 2200 and auto and wheel at
each corner should have been good. traded it back to same dealer for a granada,
the mk 1 2 litre pinto. dad still says best tow car ever had. very fetching met brown
with beige vinyl roof. used to pretend we were like the sweeny lol, except whish
ad 3 litre essex motor....and its own fuel tanker shadowing it.

what tow / recovery point did you use?

I pulled a 7.5 tonne flat bed out of a muddy field, it was only being used as a carnival float at the time, but the driver said you won't pull it out with that !!!! Challenge, :thumbs put towing strap on the rear tow ball, 1st gear 4 Low, I didn't even get any mud on my wheel arches, 1 minute later he was on the tarmac. He was really impressed he said he wasn't even helping, he wasn't in gear.

Only had M&S tyres as well.

My old man had a wedge Princess 1800 and used to tow start the buses with it when they wouldnt start (Bedford starters used to click but wouldnt turn without a thump with a hammer) Mind you needed a new clutch every 10 k miles LOL
