View Full Version : what is it with landrover owners
hello, just got back from the pub where i had a conversation with a villager that went like this.
what were you doing to your terrano this afternoon?
putting manual locking hubs on
why bother?
because i found that my snap rings had gone in the auto hubs
was it difficult?
no not really
why did you not just get rid and get a landrover?
because i like my creature comforts
my defender will go places you can only dream of
upon hearing that i just laughed and walked away...what is it with these people?,do they think that the only 4x4 on the planet is a landy, just wait till i get my grizzly claws fitted and meet him out on the rough stuff and he asks me for a tow...he can get stuffed.
this sort of mentality really makes my blood boil.
rant over.
thanks,
paul.

Hi devs  So you've just got your 1st taste of what I call the LR virus as it kills the owners sence of reason   When I got mmy T2 last year my m8 went out & got a surf & shouted jap 4x4's were the best but his was better than mine  but he well his other1/2 said they had to get a 7 seater he got a disco V8 on a N plate & know is shouting off that his LR is the best 4x4 you can get & realy turning his nose up at my truck because it's not a LR    At the end of the day my truck has done what i've asked it to do on/off road & am pleased with it.
i have the same with a fellow at work with a std 1.8 LWB freelander lol
hi sweety,i suppose we should just let these clowns get on with it safe in the knowledge that we have as good a 4x4 as they have but it`s just a well kept secret.

Yes I know exactly what you mean and I just can't understand it. They are both good at different things but you don't need two days in traction after driving a T2
Jim T
his traction control and hill desent is better then my locking diffs aswell

Well my troll has bin accepted to appear on the modified vehicle display on 17th Feb at Donnington. But. Im not sure its good enough. She could do with new wheels an tyres and a new set of springs really. Also I could do with fixing the winch but I doubt any of this will get done in time (other commitments and work). Might just put all the gear on, give her clean and go for it. What dya think :?:
leave the mud on,it is a nissan off road not a pampered land rover school run vehicle!

I have to say i love landies, but the series kind not the car derived junk that landrover now build for townies to take their kids to school in... Series landies are basic but cheap and easy to fix, and are guaranteed to go places where most jap 4x4's wont go...
Freelanders are an insult to the landrover name, discovery int much better, once you buy one of these you discover why that it wont go on mud very well. at the end of the day the first landrovers were basiclly tractors, they even had a pto shaft out the back to drive implements, we ran a saw bench and pulled a cockpheasant with a sIIa.
Can't slate jap 4x4's never really put mine to the test, But while working on farms in kent the boss of a farm i worked on had a swb landy to pull a cattle trailer, they loaded 3 cows in to the trailer and the landy got stuck in field. the bosses son had little Suzuki jeep, he got a chain hooked jeEp on front and pulled the landy and trailer out. much to our amazement...
I know of another farmer who had a Dihatsu four track, he pulled a 3 furrow run around plough with it, never would have believed it if i had not seen it for myself...
So anybody can knock any 4x4 but the best ones to knock are Chelsea tractors, they dont get muddy, and if they want to impress their neighbours they go and buy a tin of spray on mud...

At least T2's aren't blessed with the TD5 engine, really nice oil pump drive Land Rover........... not
Jim T
PS I have to say this, the TD5 does sound nice, when it's running before it Seizes up -rotfl-
tend to melt there pistons too! best one was 300tdi timming belt pullys out of alignement had to isue revised belt kit!

One of my bosses had a 200 tdi... Need i say more... oh alright then... while going up m6 at 80 mph the engine suddenly gained some revs was told upto the stopper pin on the dial.. he pulled onto the hard shoulder where the engine revved itself to death, and a strange looking object rather like a piston bounced out from under the engine bay.. on stripping the engine down it was found that the head gasket failed between the pot and the oil way thus running on heavier oil than normal.... engine oil... so like i said series landies fantastic.... forget the rest......
I was told the 300tdi had a crap gearbox..
Freelander and 4x4 .. please no not in same sentence or breath.. please remember ....
Freelander, Jaguar, Volvo and Mondeo all share a little component... the CHASSIS... yep
all part ford soon to be tata india! as someone said eleswhere build quality will go up if nowt else lol!
mr-gadget

If build quality got any lower they would all be Sinclair C5's.....
oops that goes onto anther vehicle.... Citreon C5... oh dear who named that car...
i remeber following couple landies in my ol citreom 1.7d bx stuck it on high and she coped as good as theres been different in wet though lol
Easiest reply / put down, Make sure recovery up to date, Also when i go out i drive back.
My mate has a 90, when he saw my T2 he said "Its not a real 4x4 it more of a SUV!" 8O
Well went out on the lanes with him one day, It was before I had AT's on her. He said Follow me incase you get stuck... the cheek of it.
Well went all over the place never got stuck once at the end of the day he said it did well, but it still wasn't a landie. I said it did everything your 90 did just with aircon and comfort   and for the equivilent car £6k cheaper.
In the time he has ownerd the landie about a year he has had..
Total suspension rebuild £800
Welding on the chassis £250
Steering damper £50
He had to fit rear seats £300
Other bits and bobs £200
My Car has had a new stst £12
The only advantage with landies it there are lots Mods available other than that they seem to be a bit of a money pit.

Oh don't forget the next too days off work with back ache to his costs
Jim T
PS I guess we are getting just as bad as them now  but I have to say that I wouldn't mind a pre 1971 landie when the T2 has to go as the Tax is free.

To be fair I wouldn't mind a series LR that is Tax free for accasional use, however they are totally different kettle of fish.
I still think give me a choice out of a Y reg T2 and a Y reg Disco, it the T2 every time, much better value for money.
im off down the lanes later and i told mr freelander to come along, he said no as it will get dirty
the really funny thing is when i park next to it at work, my bonnets just below his roof line lol

Thing to consider is that without the original Land Rover concept then within the UK the 4x4 scene would never have developed into what it is now, even though parallel developments took place all over the world.
Series LR's, classics, like any other car that old. Capable off road, but that is where they belong. 90/110 models up to the 300 will also be classics in time, but after that LR have in part been forced to loose the plot by management but also emission issues. Plus they have become lifestyle led, with lots of people subscribing to the image but few ever needing a 4x4 in the truest sense.
Re mods, there is a very good school of thought that says a 4x4's capability from the factory is how it should be, the more bolt ons that are needed indicates a deficiency from the factory - ie a LR's lack of steering guard for one.
I've driven with LR's & other jap 4x4's and not been embarrassed by capabilities or luxury of the Terrano. When you see a "other half" who's been sold the "LR's are the best, everything else gets stuck...." tale, and my little SWB T2 keeps up, with comfort & a degree of luxury, then the conversations that occur are funny - is it noisy, are the seats comfy, what do you mean its got air con!!??!! But then some of the mods (rock sliders) are not a luxury, they are almost an essential off road, yet can they be easily got for a T2, no.
There has to be a certain amount of patriotism in the LR scene, certainly, that occurs in most countries where they have a "home grown" 4x4, like our wagons in Spain, for an example. Does make me wonder what will happen to the brand if Tata take over, the newest Defender/Ford engine might not be there if that occurs, what would Tata then put into the vehicle? The hated TD5 engine again, or maybe source somethng else (Isuzu engine like the Aussie LR's maybe?)
Lets not knock LR owners, or their vehicles, each to their own, and when it comes to unsurfaced RoW access we all need to be able to get on together.
But as a final departing shot, what do you call a LR without any oil leaks?
Empty of oil!!!
NISSAN 4X4 OWNERS CLUB IS THE BEST 4X4 BY FAR
show that to your mates
i think tata will use a quality engine in there landy maybe a nissan one lol then theyll be half way descent!!!

Lets face it, anything would be better than some of the lumps LR have fobbed off on the public in the past!!!!! Got a feeling if this happened it would be with Isuzu engines, as these were fitted to the Aussie and (I think) South African spec vehicles, due to reliability and servicing issues in these countries.

Ford want rid of LR. They have had interest from Tata, some private equity companies, and others; Tata is, apparently, the preferred bidder.
Longest anti L R topic ,that hasnt been locked.

Wouldn't say it was currently anti LR, this thread, certainly started that way though!
this thread was never started as anti land rover just the blinkered mentality of a few lr owners, sorry if it was percieved as anti land rover but never meant it to be.

Not a problem, just that we do have some LR owners on here, and in the past threads have bene locked to prevent things getting too personal (maybe).
thread never got personal but the pms i recieved did lol but hey the disco saved lr bacon the transit boys all moaning about engine reliability so maybe ford selling the tata guys a lame duck isuzu sorted there 3.0tdi out now ithink so could be worthwile transplant, believe tata quite big company with plenty cash ......there gonna need it lol

Best engine i ever saw in SIII landy was a Naturally aspirated 6.4 litre diesel taken out of a Massey Ferguson combine. Went like stink, but was extremely heavy... One of the great things with the SIII, any engine will go in, all you need is the know how, I stuck a 2.5 litre turbo diesel engine in mine on a range rover box, lots of cutting about on the chassis, drive shafts etc, but double the mpg and went like rocket.. oh what fun.. wish I could afford another....
saw a yanky v8 diesel conversion on ebay once almost wet meself thinking of the grunt, land cruiser is getting a 4.5 v8 oil burner maybe they could be persuaded lol
