--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well today I picked up a 1999 Patrol GR SE Touring 2.8

Really nice car to drive, i love the beefy sound to the engine, and it feels bigger than the disco I used to drive.

However, there are a few problems.

The fuel gauge has started to take a life of its own. Yet, I have a reciept for the sender etc being replaced in Jan 08 for a total cost of £400+!

The pump for the headlamp washers will run for 5seconds when you turn the ignition on.

Only the front drivers door speaker and tweeters work.

NATS system is unplugged but flashes the lights when plugged in, assume I need to get a master key of some sort.

4H will not engage, lever just wont move back, yet the light comes on and then will suddenly go off.

Car needs ignition to be left on for about 8-10seconds after the heating coil light goes out before it will start easily. Otherwise it cranks over for a few seconds and has poured white then black smoke out the back. Doesnt smoke when running though.

Anyone have any ideas to any of the above problems?

I'll put some pictures up tomorrow, for now I have this one:

blimey...where to start. i dont really know patrols, but i suppose the issues are quite general. Id say the washer jet thing is fuse/relay related, or a bad earth. 4H...hmm...if the lever wont move back, then im not sure thats so good. are you sure it isnt PUSH down then back? NATs-yes, probably a master key is required or key needs programming. Fuel gauge, if sender has been done, again, could there be a general bad earth issue going on here?? Just the majority of issues really do sound electrical, likes theres a bad earth, bad fuse or relay etc affecting those points raised...

id go round the engine, check the earth cables, battery wire/clamps and inspect all the fuses-ball ache i know but worth doing.

Had the gear lever covers off and it does shift into 4H its just the lever is sloppy between 2H and 4H. Whoever owned this in the past has done some interesting (amateur) work on it. Boost gauge fitted in the cup holder next to the handbrake, wires fed out by the shift lever and up into the bay, rather than through the bulkhead, among other things

Sloppy shifting was down to the cotter pin, tightened it up and that seems to have sorted that problem out.
