Patrol Y61 2.8 Mods

Thought I'd start a new thread with my patrol that I'm doing some mods to slowly but surely.

Had a bad start with it as bought it from a garage (never again will I trust a back street garage) and when I picked it up I noticed the clutch started slipping and when I was on a bit of duel carrageway I looked down at my dash and noticed it was overheating

Never got it back for a while as garage tried to fix it through warranty claim. I got truck back, seemed ok for a while but the opposite was happening. She wasn't getting hot enough.
Yep, you guessed it. They gave me it back with no thermostat in it. F%&k going back there, I don't care. I'm sure this car is good underneath, just needs a bit of tlc.

Anyway, at this moment all is good so let's make this a nice little truck with a few offroad modifications...

Done a nice laneing trip to thetford, used the stabilizer disconnect on some of the tougher pathes which worked a treat

It was becoming apparent that suspension was very old, worn and sagging. Decided to get some pedders suspension which was a 2 inch lift with extreme travel shocks and some alignment products and steering damper. Also got some 20mm spring spacers

About a 2 3/4 inch lift

That new suspension has done it the world of good,the stance looks so much better :thumb2

Mmmmm a new thread, great. What size tyres is she wearing in the pic out of interest, the lift has made them shrink... Must compliment you on how tidy it is.

You can't really notice it in the photos but the stance is good but the tyre size looks so small now to the point it actually doesn't look right. The suspension was sagging so much it actually raised the truck well over 5 inches on one corner

Before doing anything else I wanted to make sure rust was taken care off especially if I'm going to be using it more offroad.

Inner and outer sills were welded, all arch extensions were taken off and fixed, fibreglassed where needed and treated and front and back bumpers taken off and had the same treatment. Everything underneath also waxoiled.

I've left the back bumper off for a better clearance angle and with the possibility of a steel one going on in future it's not needed.

Under all the arches, sills and front bumper all look the same but don't have pictures of the front unfortunately.

Taking my rear bumper off was one of the best choices I made for offloading - baby's got more than a little back otherwise!

I should also point out that in order to take back bumper off I had to order some euro spec lights to move everything into the same light clusters. As you can see in the pics I chose to go for the orange indicator lenses as it's pre face lift so I think it suites this particular truck quite nicely.

Hi and thank you Daemo. She is wearing 265/75/16 Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tyres so that's just under 32 inch diameter if memory serves me right when I worked it out.

Don't see many people using these tyres but they are bloody brilliant in all conditions I must say.

Exhaust time and always an interesting topic.
I wanted to get one fabricated to my specific requirements. First off I wanted to see just what noise levels were going to be like with a straight through system so I downloaded an app to measure db, not scientific I know but I was more interested in the difference in sound purely as a gauge rather than an accurate measurement.
I cut the middle box out and welded the back box in its place so it exited just before the rear diff, only the back tiny silencer now in place which never really did anything.
End result was not a big change at all inside the cabin, was a good bit louder outside and on acceleration but more than livable with and it did sound good ��

So, what to do with the exhaust. What size and where to put the exit. I decided to go with a straight through 3 inch pipe, that's 3 inch external diameter 2.85 inch internal. I never know when people are talking about exhaust sizes if they are talking internal or external size but next size up is way too big. 3 inch it is we'll call it.

Side exit is always the popular choice but I couldn't see it working. Behind front tyre or in front of rear tyre made it prone to damage and behind rear tyre I want a steel bumper that id rather not make a hole in and making it short was going to give me grief at mot time so they were all out. I even thought about straight out the front wing but too many things in the way like abs pipes.

So out the back she came

I've got 2 flexi pipes out on, one in normal place and one at the back as you can see in the pic above. This is so that if it gets a heavy knock off road or gets clogged up with mud it's only the very end that needs replaced.

Are they Pedders springs as well as the shocks?
